No engine fault is confirmed. The Allshift robot is the weak spot, so test drive it and ask for actuator and adaptation records.

At a glance

  • Years and codes: built 2004 to 2012, with a facelift in late 2008. Petrols 3A91 (1.1), 4A90 (1.3), 135950 (1.5) and 4G15 (1.5 turbo). Diesel 639939 (1.5 DI-D, 2004-2008 only).
  • Reliability: 3/5. The Allshift robot can lose drive. No engine fault is confirmed in the sources read.
  • DIY: 2/5. Actuator and clutch work needs a workshop. Most buyer checks need no tools.
  • Prefer: a manual car, or an Allshift car with records of actuator work and adaptation.
  • Avoid: an Allshift car with no records of actuator repairs or adaptation.

Before you buy

  1. Allshift test drive. With the car stopped and the clutch pedal down, engage reverse and first, then pull away gently. Reverse that does not engage, a jolt, or a loss of drive is a fault. A scanner is needed to read the gearbox fault memory.
  2. Allshift adaptation records. Ask for proof of adaptation (relearning). Kolesa.ru advises one every 20,000 km. A car with no record, or with actuator work and no adaptation, is a bad sign.
  3. Manual gears. With the clutch pedal down and the car stopped, shift through every gear and reverse. Gears that stick or are very hard to engage are a fault.
  4. Recall check. Ask a dealer to check the torque sensor campaign for the VIN.

In detail

Allshift actuator and clutch faults

Symptoms: reverse does not engage. On a fault the car loses drive, and it gives no limp mode to get home (Kolesa.ru). Cause: the actuators that work the clutch and the gear selection wear or break. An actuator operating rod can snap, so no gear engages (Za Rulem). Which cars: the 6-speed Allshift automated manual. Fix: the actuator is replaced or restored, then the unit is reflashed or relearned. A new clutch can also be needed (Za Rulem). Care: do not disconnect the battery right after switch-off. The unit needs 20 to 30 seconds to calibrate, and the actuator tolerates low voltage badly (Za Rulem). Kolesa.ru advises an adaptation every 20,000 km.

Hard shifting on the 5-speed manual

Symptoms: gears are hard to engage, and reverse is often the worst. Cause: the gear selector shaft can seize. Za Rulem says this happens at times by about 150,000 km. Which cars: the 5-speed manual.

Recalls

Country Code Years What is done
EU Not given 2011-2012 A connector pin on the torque sensor of the electric power steering can oxidise. Check the VIN with a dealer.

Maintenance

  • Allshift adaptation: Kolesa.ru advises one every 20,000 km.
  • Battery: wait 20 to 30 seconds after switch-off before you disconnect the battery (Za Rulem).
