1. On the K4M, listen for a rattle in the first seconds after a cold start. Ask whether the phaser was replaced with the timing belt.
2. Test the keycard, central locking and immobiliser. Check that the lights do not switch on by themselves.
3. On a Grandtour built 2003-2009, check that the rear roof spoiler is firmly fixed. A loose spoiler is the recall defect.
4. Check the ignition coils for misfire and rough running.
5. On a manual, check for clutch judder when pulling away and a whistle from the release bearing.
6. Ask a Renault dealer to check open campaigns for the car's VIN before you buy.
