At a glance
- Years: built 1999 to 2007 as hatchback, Combi and saloon. The facelift came for the 2005 model year.
- Most common: the 1.2 HTP timing chain can stretch and cause major engine damage. Diesel timing belts and turbos carry a similar risk.
- Reliability: 2/5, because a stretched chain or a torn belt can end the engine.
- DIY: 3/5, because window regulators and coils are home jobs. The chain, belt and turbo are workshop jobs.
- Prefer: a 12-valve 1.2 HTP with chain service proof, and a 1.9 TDI PD with belt and turbo records.
- Avoid: a 1.2 HTP 6V (AWY, BMD) without chain service proof.

Before you buy
- Timing chain (1.2 HTP). Ask for proof that the chain was checked or replaced. Bad result: no proof and no answer.
- Timing belt (diesel). Ask for the date and mileage of the last belt change. Bad result: no record, or more than 90,000 km since the change on a 1.9 SDI or 1.9 TDI.
- Turbo (1.9 TDI PD). Ask whether the turbo was replaced, and whether the pipes and intercooler were cleaned. Bad result: a whine or lost power on the test drive.
- Crankcase breather (1.0 and 1.4 8V). Ask whether a heated breather is fitted. Bad result: no heated breather on a car used in frost.
- Ignition coils (petrol). Start the engine warm and listen for misfire or stalling. Bad result: a misfire. A scanner shows the fault codes.
- Windows and central locking. Use every window switch and the central locking, from the key and from inside. Bad result: a window drops, sticks or stops, or the doors lock or unlock on their own.
- Suspension. Check the tie rods on a lift. Bad result: knocks or play.
- VIN check. Ask a Skoda dealer to check the VIN for the driver airbag and fuel pump campaigns and service action 97J7. Bad result: an open campaign.

In detail
Timing chain stretch, 1.2 HTP
The 1.0 and 1.2 HTP engines have a timing chain, not a belt. The chain can stretch early. A stretched chain can cause major engine damage. gebrauchtwagenberater.de advises the 12-valve 1.2 (AZQ, BME) over the 6-valve (AWY, BMD). carwiki.de (Polo 9N page) also names chain stretch on the 1.2 petrol. An owner on PistonHeads says early VAG 1.2 chains could jump, and that the design was fixed in 2003 and changed again in 2005. Ask which version the car has. The sources give no mileage and no repair price.

Timing belt tear on diesels
The timing belt drives the camshaft. If it tears, the engine can be badly damaged. gebrauchtwagenberater.de and carwiki.de name the risk on the 1.9 SDI, the 1.9 TDI and the 1.4 TDI. On the 1.9 SDI and 1.9 TDI, gebrauchtwagenberater.de (Polo 9N page, an engine the Polo shares with the Fabia) says to change the belt by 90,000 km at the latest. Keep to the service intervals. The sources give no cost and no part numbers.

Turbocharger failure, 1.9 TDI PD
gebrauchtwagenberater.de names turbo wear at higher mileage on the 1.9 TDI. kfz-dietrich.com names turbo wear among the diesel weak points on the Polo at high mileage. Fabia vRS owners on PistonHeads report failed turbos, with lost power and a whine. One owner's dealer turbo failed again within three weeks. One owner on PistonHeads found fragments in the pipework and the old intercooler, so clean or replace both with the turbo.

Crankcase breather freezes
The crankcase breather, the valve that vents gases from the engine, can fail in frost. This mainly affects the 1.0 and the 1.4 built up to late 2001. carwiki.de (Polo 9N page) reports that a 1.4 petrol seized after freezing, because of low oil supply. Check whether a heated breather is fitted. The sources give no cost.

Ignition coil failure, petrol
Ignition coils fail regularly on the petrol engines. A failed coil causes misfires and loss of power. In the worst case the engine stalls. WhoCanFixMyCar names the same coil failures on the VW Polo with the same engines. It quotes a Polo price, so no Fabia price is given here.

Power windows and central locking
Window regulators fail more often on the Fabia. Power window defects are not rare, and they are usually cheap to fix if you do the job yourself. The central locking microswitches fail, so the doors open and lock only with the key. Owners report that the central locking opens on its own. The sources give no price.

Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Austria and Germany (press reports, no KBA page read) | not given | 2001-2003 (sources differ) | Defect: moisture in the airbag propellant; the gas generator housing may burst. Driver-side gas generator replaced at a workshop. |
| Germany (two German press sources, no KBA page read) | not given | 2004 | Defect: undersized fuel pump bolts may break and leak fuel. Fix not described. |
| Not stated | 97J7 | Pre-facelift cars | Defect: the wiring harness sits where water collects, and corrosion causes electrical faults. Service action meant to fix most cars; earlier owners may have missed it. |
No KBA number was found for these campaigns. Check open campaigns by VIN before you buy.
Maintenance
- Change the timing belt on 1.9 SDI and 1.9 TDI engines by 90,000 km at the latest.
- Check that a heated breather is fitted on 1.0 and 1.4 8V cars that stand in frost.
- Check the tie rods at each service. Wear rises at high mileage, and so do oil leaks from engine and gearbox.
