1. Listen for a metallic rattle in the first seconds after a cold start. A BMW-capable scanner reads codes P0008, P0016, P0017 and P0341. Bad result: a rattle, those codes, or no chain history after 100,000 km.
2. Drive off slowly from a stop, then in stop-and-go traffic. Bad result: a delayed take-up, a rough engagement or a warning light.
3. Check for rough idle and misfire on a cold and a warm start. Ask for fuel and oil history. Bad result: rough idle, misfire or power loss.
4. Open and close the rear doors and listen on a bumpy road. Bad result: a creak from the rear passenger area, or seals that come loose.
