At a glance
- Years: 2019 to 2024. Most cars are front drive. The M135i and the 120d have xDrive.
- Reliability: 3/5. The timing chain and the 7-speed DCT carry most of the risk.
- DIY: 2/5. Chain and gearbox jobs need a BMW scanner and a workshop.
- Prefer: a car with a full service book and proof of chain and gearbox fluid service.
- Avoid: a 7-speed DCT that delays or jerks at take-up, and a 1.5 diesel with no EGR or injector history.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.5 petrol B38 (B38A15A, B38A15F; 116i, 118i): the timing chain and carbon build-up are in the table.

Before you buy
- Listen for a metallic rattle in the first seconds after a cold start. A BMW-capable scanner reads codes P0008, P0016, P0017 and P0341. Bad result: a rattle, those codes, or no chain history after 100,000 km.
- Drive off slowly from a stop, then in stop-and-go traffic. Bad result: a delayed take-up, a rough engagement or a warning light.
- Ask for EGR valve and injector work on record. Bad result: no record after 80,000 km, or power loss and limp mode. A BMW scanner (ISTA) readout shows the control-unit data.
- Check for rough idle and misfire on a cold and a warm start. Ask for fuel and oil history. Bad result: rough idle, misfire or power loss.
- Open and close the rear doors and listen on a bumpy road. Bad result: a creak from the rear passenger area, or seals that come loose.
- Ask a BMW dealer to check open recall campaigns for this VIN. Bad result: an open airbag campaign on a 2020 build.

In detail
Timing chain (B38, B48 and B47)
Symptom: a metallic rattle in the first seconds after a cold start. A scanner can show P0008, P0016, P0017 and P0341.
Cause: the chain stretches with running hours, and the tensioner loses pressure. KFZ Dietrich names this on the B38, B48 and B47 of the 2 Series Active Tourer F45, which uses the same engines. The garage checks the chain from 100,000 km. Gebrauchtwagenberater says the problems mostly follow neglected service and very short trips. CarWiki calls it an occasional weak point.
Which cars: the B38 (116i, 118i), B48 (120i, M135i) and B47 (118d, 120d). The fact is taken from the F45 pages with the same engine codes.
Fix: chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets, replaced as one set.
Cost: 1,450-1,890 EUR (B38), 1,690-2,190 EUR (B48), 1,890-2,490 EUR (B47), net, with diagnosis at 89-149 EUR. Germany, 2026, one garage (KFZ Dietrich).

7-speed dual-clutch (DCT)
Symptom: delayed engagement when pulling away, and a rough take-up in some cars. Gebrauchtwagenberater names the Getrag 7-speed DKG on the X1 F48 and says to test it on the test drive.
Cause: one clutch can fail. auto.ru names the same 7-speed DCT on the 2 Series Active Tourer F45 and puts the shifting problems at 100,000-120,000 km.
Which cars: the Getrag 7-speed DCT. The sources name the same gearbox on the F45 and the X1 F48.
Cost: no price is confirmed for the clutch.

B37 diesel EGR and injectors
Symptom: power loss and limp mode. Injectors can drift out of tolerance.
Cause: a coked EGR valve. The DPF loads up after failed regenerations on short trips, and a sticking variable turbine actuator (VTG) also causes power loss. KFZ Dietrich names these faults on the B37 of the F45.
Which cars: the 1.5 diesel B37 (116d).
Typical km: auto.ru puts EGR clogging at 30,000-40,000 km and injector failure at 60,000-100,000 km. KFZ Dietrich checks the EGR, DPF and injectors from 80,000 km.
Cost: no price is confirmed for the B37.

B38 petrol carbon build-up
Symptom: rough idle, misfire, power loss and higher fuel use.
Cause: carbon on the intake valves and coking in the direct injectors. auto.ru says poor fuel makes the injectors fail quickly, and wrong oil can cause coking.
Which cars: the 1.5 petrol B38 (116i, 118i).
Fix: the F40 page advises cleaning fuel additives and, in some cases, premium fuel. Gebrauchtwagenberater
Cost: no price is confirmed.

Creaks and loose door seals
Symptom: creaks from the rear passenger area, a loud creak from the wipers, and door seals that come loose.
Cause and fix: PistonHeads reports a creak on the nearside rear. BMW's fix, as reported, is to remove the door card and add sticky tape and silicone lubricant. An owner says the door seals came off and were repaired under warranty (PistonHeads owner thread).
Which cars: all F40 according to Gebrauchtwagenberater. The PistonHeads creak report is on the M135i.
Cost: not stated.

Maintenance
- Timing chain: keep to the service plan and avoid many very short trips. Missed services and short trips are the usual cause (Gebrauchtwagenberater).
- Diesel: from 80,000 km, check the EGR, DPF and injectors. Short trips load the DPF (KFZ Dietrich).
- Petrol: use cleaning fuel additives to limit carbon build-up (Gebrauchtwagenberater).
