A roomy family MPV with real weak spots, so prefer a well-serviced car and check the petrol timing chain, the diesel EGR system and the gearbox first.

At a glance

  • Years: 2014 to 2022. The F45 arrived in 2014, the F46 in 2015.
  • Reliability: 2/5. Timing chains, diesel EGR systems and gearboxes are the weak points.
  • DIY: 2/5. Chain, EGR and gearbox work need a BMW-capable scanner and a workshop.
  • Prefer: a facelift car with a full service record and proof of timing chain, EGR and gearbox oil work.
  • Avoid: early manual B38 cars built to March 2015, and diesels with no EGR or DPF history.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.5 B38 petrol (B38A15A, B38A15F; 216i, 218i, 225xe): timing chain and the early crankshaft bearing are in the table.
  • 2.0 B48 petrol (B48A20A, B48A20B; 220i, 225i): the timing chain is in the table.
  • 1.5 B37 diesel (B37C15A; 214d, 216d): EGR, DPF, injector and VTG faults are in the table.
  • 2.0 B47 diesel (B47C20B; 218d, 220d): its guide covers the EGR cooler, EGR valve, turbo, injectors and DPF; the timing chain is in the table. See the BMW B47 diesel.
  • 225xe plug-in hybrid: no hybrid fault is confirmed; the battery recall is in the Recalls table.

Before you buy

  1. Cold start: listen for a metallic rattle. A BMW-capable scanner reads the chain adaptation and codes P0008, P0016, P0017, P0341. Bad result: a rattle, a chain check overdue after 100,000 km, or no chain record.
  2. Check the build date and gearbox. Bad result: a manual B38 built to March 2015 with no proof of the BMW service action.
  3. On a B37 diesel, ask for the EGR, DPF and injector history. A scanner reads the values. Bad result: a clogged EGR, a DPF warning, or no work record.
  4. Ask a BMW dealer to check open campaigns for the VIN. Bad result: an open campaign.
