At a glance
- Years: 1990 to 2000, all bodies.
- Reliability: 2/5. Rust, cooling faults and worn suspension are the main risks on cars of this age.
- DIY: 3/5. Bushes need a BMW tool or a saw, and rust repairs need a welder.
- Biggest risks: rust in the floor, sills and strut towers; a cooling system that overheats.
- Prefer: a car with a stamped service history and proof of cooling and suspension work.
- Avoid: cars with rust in the floor or sills, and cars that overheat or have no record of cooling work.
Engines and gearboxes
- M40 1.6 and 1.8 (M40B16, M40B18, to 1994): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- M50 six-cylinders (M50B20, M50B25): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- M52 six-cylinders (M52B25, M52B28): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- Early M52 sixes (to about 1998): Nikasil-coated bores can wear. See below.
- GM 4L30E automatic (4-speed): Kolesa.ru says the oil pump and plastic washers are weak points, and that it does not tolerate overheating.
- ZF 5HP18 automatic (5-speed): Kolesa.ru says the torque converter can wear at about 300,000 km.

Before you buy
- Lift the car and check the sills, the floor under both footwells, the rear arches, the boot lid and the strut towers. Bad result: holes, soft metal, or new paint over rust.
- Check the radiator and expansion tank seam for leaks, and watch the temperature on a warm test drive. Bad result: a leak, or a rising temperature.
- Check the rear strut mounts and front ball joints. Bad result: loose or cracked mounts, or clunks over bumps.
- On automatics, test every gear and ask for the gearbox service record. Bad result: slipping, harsh shifts, or limp mode.
- Test every window and check the door cards and dash for cracks. Bad result: slow or dead windows, or cracked plastic.
- On a 323i or 328i built before March 1998, ask for a leak-down test. Bad result: low pressure in one or more cylinders.

In detail
Body rust
- Symptoms: holes or soft metal at the rear arches, sills, floor and boot lid. Exhaust brackets rust too.
- Cause: water collects between the double-skinned panels and rusts from inside. Factory sealant peels and hides the rust.
- Which cars: all E36, early builds most. ADAC says rust protection was poor until the facelift.
- Fix: cut out the rust and weld in new metal.
- Cost: no confirmed price.

Cooling system
- Symptoms: overheating and a leak at the radiator and expansion tank seam.
- Cause: plastic parts. The water pump impeller (the vane inside the pump) can break. The radiator and tank split with age. The thermostat sticks open, so the engine never warms up, or closes and overheats.
- Which cars: all engines.
- Fix: owners replace the pump, thermostat, radiator and hoses together. AutoBild gives under one hour of labour for the pump change (Germany, 2003).
- Cost: no confirmed price.

Suspension and steering wear
- Symptoms: a loose feel, knocks over bumps, play in the joints, and leaks from the power steering.
- Cause: worn ball joints and bushes, and strut mounts that crack or tear out of the body. The steering rack leaks with age.
- Which cars: all E36.
- Fix: replace the worn joints and bushes. A torn strut mount cannot be aligned, so it is welded or replaced.
- Typical km (Kolesa.ru): front shocks last about 40,000-50,000 km.
- Cost: no confirmed price.

Automatic gearbox wear
- Symptoms: the automatic shifts stubbornly, slips or breaks down.
- Cause: worn parts inside the gearbox. Kolesa.ru says the 4L30E oil pump and plastic washers are weak points. On the 5HP18, the torque converter (the fluid coupling that replaces a clutch) wears.
- Which cars: 4L30E on 4-speed cars, 5HP18 on 5-speed cars.
- Fix: the sources name the weak parts but give no repair method or price.
- Typical km: the 5HP18 torque converter can wear at about 300,000 km (Kolesa.ru).
- Cost: no confirmed price.

Nikasil bore wear on early M52 engines
- Symptoms: uneven idle from lost compression. In bad cases, power loss, high oil use and hard cold starts.
- Cause: early European M52 engines have aluminium bores with a Nikasil coating. Sulphur in the fuel of that time attacked the coating, and the bore then wore fast.
- Which cars: single-VANOS M52 sixes (323i, 328i) built to about 1998. ShiftBMW gives March 1998 as the change to steel liners. Not every engine is affected.
- Fix: a new block with liners, or a new engine. Change the pistons and rings with the block.
- Cost: no confirmed price.

Window regulators and interior trim
- Symptoms: windows that are slow or dead. Door cards and dash plastic crack and sag. Wiring insulation crumbles.
- Cause: worn regulators and motors, and plastic that dries out with age.
- Which cars: all E36. On the Cabrio, the plastic rear window tears.
- Fix: the sources name the faults but give no repair method. Door cards are often worn at this age.
- Cost: no confirmed price.

Recalls
No recall is stated for this model in the sources. ADAC lists no E36 recalls, and the TÜV-Report no longer covers the E36. Check open campaigns for your VIN with a BMW dealer.
Maintenance
- Oil: change every 15,000 km on the 316i. The 328i is 25,000 km or 24 months (ADAC).
- Cooling: owners replace the thermostat, radiator and hoses at the same time as the water pump (owner advice, PistonHeads).
