At a glance
- Years: 2004 to 2010. The 2006 facelift brought the N52 petrol sixes and the 3.0sd diesel.
- Reliability: 2/5. The xDrive transfer case and the rear springs lower the score. The panorama roof rail is an expensive repair.
- DIY: 3/5. Springs and swirl flaps are workshop jobs for most owners. The transfer case needs a workshop.
- Prefer: a car with records of transfer case work, and proof that the diesel fuel heater and petrol VANOS recalls were done.
- Avoid: xDrive cars that jerk when pulling away or rumble and hum, and a 2.0d M47 with no record of its swirl flaps.
Engines and gearboxes
- 2.5i and 3.0i petrol, M54 (2004-2006): oil loss and a clogging crankcase valve are reported. Ask for oil change records.
- 2.0i petrol, N46B20B (2005-2010): timing chain wear is reported. See the table.
- 2.5si and 3.0si petrol, N52B25A and N52B30A (2006-2010): the BMW 5 Series E60 with the same engine reports oil burn from stuck rings and a faulty crankcase valve. Ask for oil use history.
- 2.0d M47 (204D4, 2004-2007): swirl flaps are the known weak point. See the table.
- 3.0d M57, 218 PS and 3.0sd 286 PS (2005-2010), and the early 204 PS 3.0d: exhaust manifold cracks. See the table.
- 2.0d N47D20C (2007-2010): the timing chain and swirl flap issues are in the N47 guide. See the BMW N47 diesel.
- Six-speed manual: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- Five-speed automatic (2.5i, 3.0i, early 3.0d, to 2006): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- Six-speed ZF 6HP automatic: See the ZF 6HP automatic.

Before you buy
- Drive off gently from a stop on a flat road. Bad result: jerking, rumbling or humming from the transfer case.
- Check that all four tyres are one size with even tread. Bad result: mixed sizes or uneven wear, which add wear to the transfer case.
- Look under the rear for broken rear springs and check the rear height. Bad result: a broken coil or a sagging rear end.
- Open and close the panorama roof twice. Bad result: a rattle, a roof that sticks or a broken rail. A rail repair costs at least 2,100 EUR.
- Ask for a record of the swirl flaps on a 2.0d M47. Bad result: no record of any check or replacement.
- Ask for a timing chain record on a 2.0i N46. Bad result: no record of chain work on a high-mileage car.
- Check the oil level after a drive, and ask for oil change records on petrol cars. Bad result: the level falls between changes or the exhaust shows blue smoke.
- Ask for proof that the fuel heater recall was done on a diesel built 2008 or 2009. Bad result: no proof.
- Ask for proof that the VANOS bolt recall was done on a six-cylinder petrol built from September 2009. Bad result: no proof.

xDrive transfer case
- Symptoms: jerking under partial load and when pulling away. Rumbling and humming. AUTO BILD calls the transfer case faults serious.
- Cause: the servo motor fails and the friction plates burn. Mixed tyre sizes, uneven pressures or tread, and old oil add wear.
- Teardown: burnt oil, a damaged oil pump, damaged shift forks, and worn friction and steel plates.
- Fix: a workshop replaces the friction and steel plates, oil pump and shift forks. According to AUTO BILD, BMW replaced the unit under warranty or goodwill.

- Cause: plastic chain guides break with age, upper guide first.
- Which cars: the 2.0i N46B20B. The N46 wears its chain less often than the N42.
