At a glance
- Years: built 2003 to 2012. Some engines are listed up to 2013.
- Main risks: the power steering cuts out, and the Dualogic gearbox drops into neutral or shifts slowly.
- Reliability: 2/5, because the power steering and the Dualogic gearbox fail, and the body rusts.
- DIY: 2/5, because the steering and gearbox checks need a diagnostic tool.
- Prefer: a manual car with no rust on the sills. Avoid: a Dualogic car that drops into neutral or shifts slowly.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.1 FIRE petrol (54 PS): 40 kW, code 187A1000, 2003-2010. No engine fault confirmed.
- 1.2 FIRE petrol (60 PS): 44 kW, code 188A4000, 2003-2010. Free-running, so a broken timing belt does not damage the valves. Still change the belt on time: a broken belt leaves you stranded. Also sold with the Dualogic gearbox. See the 1.2 FIRE guide.
- 1.2 FIRE Natural Power (gas, CNG): 38 kW, 2007-2010. No gas-system fault confirmed.
- 1.2 FIRE petrol (69 PS): 51 kW, code 169A4000, 2010-2013. Not free-running, so a broken timing belt can damage the engine.
- 1.4 petrol (51 or 57 kW): code 350A1000, 2010-2012. Also sold with Natural Power. No engine fault confirmed.
- 1.4 16V petrol (100 PS): 73 kW, code 169A3000, 2006-2010, with the 6-speed manual. No engine fault confirmed.
- 1.3 Multijet diesel (70 PS): 51 kW, code 188A8000, 2004-2010. No common fault confirmed.
- 1.3 Multijet diesel (75 PS): 55 kW, code 169A5000, 2006-2013. No common fault confirmed.
- 5-speed manual: the clutch wears, see Clutch wear.
- Dualogic automated manual: a clutch and an actuator (the unit that moves the gears) shift for you. Its faults are in Dualogic gearbox.

Before you buy
- Turn the steering wheel to full lock and drive slowly. If the power steering cuts out, the wheel turns heavy, or a warning light is on, the steering is faulty. A fault check needs a diagnostic tool.
- Drive over bumps and turn the wheel on full lock. Knocks, rattles or vague steering mean worn ball joints, track rod ends or shock absorbers.
- Make several up-shifts and down-shifts on a test drive. A drop into neutral, or slow or jerky shifts, means a fault in the Dualogic gearbox. The fault check and the adaptation check need a diagnostic tool.
- Pull away from rest several times. Jerking when pulling away points to a worn clutch.
- Look under the car with a torch at the sills, wheel arches and underbody. Soft, flaking or bubbling metal is rust that needs repair.
- Look at the silencer and the flex pipes. Rust holes or a loose shell mean the part needs replacing.

In detail
Electric power steering
The power steering assist can fail while driving or at full lock. The steering turns heavy, and a warning light shows in the cluster. ABS, ESP and hill start assist can fail too, depending on the model.
The fault sits in the steering angle sensor, a sensor on the steering column. The 2008 recall was for this sensor. A faulty control unit (the electronic box that runs the power steering) causes the same failure.
Fix: replace the sensor, a job of about 1.9 hours (recall). Or fit an exchange steering column (a rebuilt unit; you send back the old one for a 100 EUR deposit). It costs 270 EUR without ESP and 299 EUR with ESP, incl. VAT, plus shipping. After fitting, a dealer or a workshop with diagnostic equipment must calibrate it. A control unit repair is listed at 298 EUR incl. VAT for private buyers, plus shipping. All prices are for Germany, year not stated.

Dualogic gearbox
Dualogic is the automated manual gearbox: a clutch and actuator shift the gears for you. Gears can drop out into neutral. Shifts can be slow, and the car can jerk when pulling away or upshifting.
Known causes: a worn clutch, a leaking actuator or hydraulics, a weak pressure accumulator (the hydraulic store), or drifted adaptation values (the gearbox's learned settings). Adaptation values drift after clutch work without a re-learn, or after a voltage drop.
The fix: seal or replace the leaking actuator, replace the worn clutch set, check that the hydraulic pressure holds, and re-learn the adaptation with a diagnostic tool after mechanical work, then test drive.
No repair price is confirmed.

Clutch wear
The car can jerk when pulling away. The clutch disc and the release bearing (the part that pushes the clutch apart) wear. The fix is a new clutch set. No repair price is confirmed.

Suspension joints and shock absorbers
Rattles and vague steering are the signs. Shock absorbers wear early, and ball joints (the joints that link the wheel to the suspension) fail. Tie rods (steering links), wishbone bushes and top mounts take the strain from kerbs and bad roads.
Russian workshop prices start at 400 RUB per ball joint or track rod end, and from 1,400 RUB per shock absorber or control arm bush. Year not stated. These are starting prices, not offers.

Rust on sills, arches and underbody
Rust appears on the sills (the strip under the doors), wheel arches, underbody and brake lines. Road salt, spray and short trips make it worse. Rust tends to become a problem from the fifth TÜV inspection (the German safety test). Prevention is a visual check and preservation (a protective coating).
No repair price is stated.

Exhaust corrosion
Condensation corrodes the silencers and flex pipes (the flexible joints in the exhaust). Short trips make it worse. Exhaust corrosion is a typical TÜV defect.
No repair price is stated.

Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | not given | 2008 model year (recall from December 2008) | Steering angle sensor replaced, about 1.9 hours of work |
Maintenance
- Dualogic fluid: Fiat specifies Tutela CS Speed. Confirm the right fluid for the car's VIN with a dealer.
- Rust: road salt, spray and short trips cause rust. Check the underbody and sills and have them preserved.
