At a glance
- Years: coupe C118 and Shooting Brake X118, built 2019 to 2023. Facelift built 2023 to 2025.
- Reliability: 3/5. Few faults are confirmed in the sources read. Jerky shifts on the 7G-DCT gearbox and oil use on the 1.3 petrol matter most.
- DIY: 2/5. The checks need no tools, but gearbox, turbo and engine work needs a workshop.
- Prefer: a car with dealer proof that the 2019-2020 turbo recall was done, an oil record, and smooth shifts on a cold test drive.
- Avoid: a 7G-DCT car with jerky or delayed shifts, a gearbox warning, or low oil at a standstill check.

Before you buy
- Test-drive the car from cold. Pull away gently from a standstill and at low speed. Bad: jerks, delayed shifts, a gearbox warning or limp mode (reduced power). A scanner reads the gearbox fault memory. Needs a scanner.
- Check the oil level on the dipstick at a standstill, with the engine warm. Ask for service invoices that name the oil. Bad: low oil between services, or no record of an oil that meets Mercedes approval.
- Ask a Mercedes dealer to check open campaigns by VIN, including the 2019-2020 turbo oil-line recall and the 2024-2025 window-airbag recall. Bad: an open campaign, or no proof that it was done.

In detail
7G-DCT gearbox faults
The shifting and clutch faults of the 7G-DCT are covered in the 7G-DCT guide. For the CLA, CarWiki says both body styles with this gearbox show various faults: noises, jerky shifts and faster clutch wear after many short trips or towing. The page advises a software update for jerky shifts. gebrauchtwagenberater reports rough shifts on some automatic cars. No mileage or cost is given for the CLA.

Higher oil use on the petrol M282
Some petrol M282 engines burn more oil than normal between oil changes. CarWiki says some owners report excessive oil use, and that it can point to piston rings (the seals around each piston) or other internal parts. gebrauchtwagenberater, on its A-Class page for the same engine, links the higher use to oil that does not meet Mercedes approvals. No official Mercedes action was found.
Symptoms: higher oil use between services. Cars: petrol M282 1.3 (CLA 180 and CLA 200), built 2019 to 2025.

Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany and UK (Auto Express, gebrauchtwagenberater) | not given | Built 2019 to 2020 | Turbo oil supply line can leak oil onto hot parts, a fire risk. Applies to the 1.3 petrol. Remedy not given. |
| Germany (MB Passion) | KBA 15743R | Built 18 April 2024 to 6 October 2025 | Window-airbag wiring laid wrongly, so the airbags may not deploy in a crash. Wiring checked and corrected where needed. |
Maintenance
- Engine oil: use oil that meets the Mercedes approval. Check the level between services on the petrol M282, and keep the invoices.
- Turbo: keep the dealer papers for the 2019-2020 turbo oil-line recall.
- Gearbox: if the 7G-DCT shifts roughly, ask the dealer about a software update. The 7G-DCT guide covers the gearbox faults in more detail.
