At a glance

  • Reliability: 3/5. Many recalls, most with a short fix. No other fault is confirmed by two independent sources in the sources read.
  • DIY: 2/5. Most checks need no tools. Diesel and gearbox work needs a scanner or a workshop.
  • Prefer: a V-Class with proof that recall work was done and a documented service history.
  • Avoid: a van with open recall campaigns or no proof of recall work.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 2.1 Mercedes OM651, rear-drive or 4MATIC (2014-2019): the timing chain and injector faults are in the OM651 guide.
  • 1.6 Renault R9M, front-drive (2015-2018): no engine fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.7 Renault R9N, front-drive (2019-2020): no engine fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 Mercedes OM654 (2019 on): no engine fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 petrol M254 (2024 on, rare): no engine fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual: no gearbox fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 7G-Tronic, 7-speed automatic (to 2019): see the 7G-Tronic guide.
  • 9G-Tronic, 9-speed automatic (2019 on): no gearbox fault confirmed in the sources read.

Known issues

No fault is confirmed by two independent sources in the sources read. The engine and gearbox lines above link the guides for the OM651 and the 7G-Tronic.

Before you buy

  1. Front exterior door handles: pull each front outer handle and check that the door opens and closes normally. Bad result: a handle that does not open the door, or a door that opens on its own.
  2. Passenger airbag OFF lamp: switch the ignition on and check that the passenger airbag OFF lamp lights and goes out. Bad result: no lamp at all.
  3. Marco Polo roof bed: ask the seller for proof that the roof-bed recall check was done, and look for rust on the roof frame or bed fasteners. Bad result: rust, or no proof of the check.
  4. Recall campaigns: ask a Mercedes dealer to check open campaigns for the van's VIN, and ask for proof of the work on the recalls below. Bad result: an open campaign, or no proof that the work was done.
