At a glance
- Covers: Vito vans and minibuses, 2014 on, with the facelift from 2019 and a second facelift from 2024. The V-Class is the same van as a people carrier.
- Reliability: 3/5. Owners praise the drivetrain and few body faults are confirmed, but AdBlue faults recur.
- DIY: 3/5. Checks and basic service are easy. AdBlue sensor and engine work needs a scanner and a workshop.
- Prefer: vans with full service records and proof that recall work was done.
- Avoid: vans with AdBlue warnings or a refused start.

Before you buy
- Cold start rattle (OM651): start the cold engine and listen for a rattle from the engine for a few seconds. The chain check needs a mechanical test with a special tool, so a workshop. Bad result: a rattle that stays after start.
- AdBlue: with the engine running, check the dash for AdBlue and engine warnings, and check the AdBlue level. A scanner reads stored NOx sensor and dosing codes. Bad result: a warning, a stored code, or a van that refuses to start.
- Recall campaigns: ask a Mercedes dealer to check open campaigns for the van's VIN, and ask for proof that recall work was done. Bad result: an open campaign.

In detail
AdBlue warnings and NOx sensor faults
Symptoms: an AdBlue warning. If the level stays low, the warnings run on to a refused start. One RAC owner's van would not start for 228 miles after an AdBlue fault.
Cause: possible causes are the NOx sensor, the dosing valve and a tank component. Owners blame the NOx sensors.
Which cars: diesels with AdBlue. The sources do not name the engine.
Fix: PistonHeads owners report NOx sensors replaced. One PistonHeads owner's sensors failed repeatedly, in and out of warranty.
Cost: no confirmed price. One PistonHeads owner calls the fix "fairly expensive" but gives no figure.

Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany (ADAC list); UK (RAC Drive, V-Class) | not given | Not given (campaign 09/2018) | Passenger airbag OFF lamp may not work. Remedy not given. A UK press report (RAC, V-Class) describes the same lamp fault and an airbag control unit reprogramming. |
| Germany (auto motor und sport, press) | 012418; 0992007 | OM654 diesel, built Jul 2020 to Apr 2022 | Fuel filter drain line can chafe and leak diesel. A sealing screw replaces the drain line, about one hour. |
| Germany (auto motor und sport, press) | 010578; VS2TIEFAWD (5891167) | 4MATIC, built Feb to Nov 2020 | Owner's manual gives 60 cm wading depth instead of 35 cm, and water can enter. Manual replaced. |
| Germany (Promobil, press) | 010748 | Built 6 Feb to 10 Mar 2021 | Front brake caliper carrier not built to spec; braking may be weaker. Check and replace, about two hours. |
In May 2018 the KBA ordered a recall for an emissions defeat device on a "Vito 1.6 diesel" (autohaus). Auto Express names the Vito 119CDI and the OM 642 and OM 651 engines. The reports do not name the W447 or a campaign code, so no row is given. Check open campaigns for the VIN with a Mercedes dealer.
Maintenance
- Keep the full service history. Buyers check that the service scope is documented.
- Keep the AdBlue tank filled. A low level brings warnings and can end in a refused start.
- Check the brakes at every service. Pads and discs wear on these heavy vans.
