1. Ask for proof of a timing belt change on any 16V petrol built up to 2001. No proof means budget for a belt change at once, at 260-500 EUR.
2. Start the engine and check that the battery warning light goes out. A light that stays on points to a failed alternator. Ask whether it was replaced.
3. Look under the car at the rear wheel arches and the front subframe mounts. Rust that has gone through the metal means a repair.
4. Ask whether the EGR valve was cleaned or replaced. It often fails by about 80,000 km.
5. Switch on the air conditioning and check that it blows cold. Ask whether the compressor was replaced.
6. Turn the key through all positions and start the car several times. The key should turn smoothly and the car should start every time. A sticking lock or a car that will not start points to the ignition lock or immobiliser.
