1. Timing belt (1.4 16V). Ask for the record of the belt and tensioner change. Bad result: no record of a change.
2. Frost damage (1.4 petrol). Ask whether the car stood outdoors in hard frost. Check the oil level on a cold engine. Bad result: low oil, or a rough start after a hard frost.
3. Ignition coils (petrol). Start the engine warm and listen for misfire. A scanner shows misfire fault codes (needs a scanner). Bad result: a misfire or a fault code.
4. Windows and central locking. Use every window switch and the central locking, from the key and from inside. Bad result: a window sticks, drops or stops. No tools needed.
5. Rear brakes. After the test drive, feel each rear wheel for heat. A lift shows the rear brakes (needs a lift). Bad result: a hot wheel, a drag, or brakes that seize.
6. Recall VIN check. Ask a dealer to check the VIN for the fuel pump screw and airbag campaigns. Bad result: a campaign not done.
