At a glance
- Years: built 2014-2024; petrol until 2019, then the electric EQ only. Rear engine, rear drive.
- Reliability: 3/5, because gearbox and suspension repairs cost real money, though breakdown figures sit mid-field.
- DIY: 3/5, because brakes, battery and exhaust bolt on at home, but clutch and gearbox work needs a workshop.
- Prefer: a manual car with a full service history, a dry engine underside and a recent exhaust.
- Avoid: a twinamic that jerks, a rotten rear silencer, or fresh underseal over an oily engine.

Before you buy
- Twinamic. Test from cold: pull away, reverse, creep. Bad result: slipping, a pause, a jerk or a warning. Have the clutch adaptation values read with a scanner.
- Brakes. Check the front discs through the wheel; test the foot brake and handbrake. Bad result: a worn lip on the discs, a long pedal or a handbrake that will not hold.
- Exhaust. Tap the rear silencer and heat shields for flakes and holes. Bad result: a rattle, a hole or a loose heat shield.
- Front suspension. Push down each front corner; drive over a rough road. Bad result: a knock from the drop links or axle mounts.
- Oil loss. Look under the engine and drive units, then at the dipstick. Bad result: fresh oil or a low level.
- Battery. Check its age; start the car with the lights on. Bad result: a slow crank or no warning.
- Pedal sensor. Let start-stop work a few times in traffic. Bad result: the engine does not restart.
- Recalls. Ask a dealer to check open campaigns by VIN.

In detail
Twinamic jerks
The twinamic is a six-speed dual-clutch box. It shifts sluggishly and often at high revs, and Auto Express found its downshifts less smooth than other twin-clutch boxes, so test it in traffic. No confirmed price.

Front brake wear
The foot brake is criticised in nearly all model years, and the 453 shows worn front discs. ADAC prices front brakes at 620 EUR and rear at 880 EUR with fitting. On the ForFour twin the brakes wear fast.

Exhaust corrosion
The rear silencer and heat shields corrode early; leaking silencers show up from about five years old. AUTO BILD quotes 525 EUR for a rear silencer including labour and VAT.

Front suspension and axle mounts
The axle mounts are a known weak point, so have them inspected. At five to nine years drop link bearings fail more often than average; springs, dampers and steering less often. One DRIVE2 owner of a 0.9 turbo at 173,500 km replaced ball joints, wishbone bushes and drop links, and found leaking rear shocks.

Oil loss at engine and drive
Oil loss at the engine and drive units is the classic fault. It shows at the first inspection and is twice as common as on the average car, so look for fresh oil rather than a clean bay. No engine is named.

Battery goes flat without warning
Early base cars gave no warning when the car was left with the lights on, so the battery went flat. The starter battery is a recurring breakdown cause from 2014 to 2020, worst on 2015 and 2016 cars; later cars improved.

Pedal sensor faults
A faulty pedal sensor sends false signals. The worst cases leave the car stranded, and the engine may not restart at traffic lights. Test start-stop and read the codes.
