At a glance

  • Years: hatchback built 1974 to 1983. Cabrio built 1979 to 1993.
  • Biggest risks: rust in the sills, wheel arches and tailgate, the Cabrio roof and oil leaks.
  • Reliability: 3/5, the engines last well, but rust and oil leaks are common.
  • DIY: 3/5, reproduction mechanical parts are cheap and widely available, but body work is the hard part.
  • Prefer: solid sills, wheel arches and floor, and a GTI that idles smoothly when cold. Avoid: rust in the sills or wheel arches, and a Cabrio roof that is torn or leaks.

Before you buy

  1. Sills, wheel arches, rear panel and tailgate: look underneath and inside the wheel arches, and check the spare wheel well, the fuel filler neck and the panel below the windscreen. A bad result is bubbling paint, soft metal, or rust through the metal.
  2. Cabrio roof (Cabrio only): look at the top inside and out, along the folds and the seals. Look for water stains on the seats and damp in the cabin. A bad result is a tear at a fold, or water marks in the cabin.
  3. Oil at the seals: look under the engine and the gearbox for fresh oil at the crank and cam seals and the gearbox input seal. A bad result is any fresh oil, or a leak at the oil pan.
  4. Suspension and steering: bounce each corner, then check the springs and the top mounts. Check the steering rack for play. A bad result is a knock over bumps, a broken spring, or play in the rack.
  5. Cold idle (K-Jetronic fuel injection): start the engine cold and listen to the idle. It should settle just under 1,000 rpm without hesitation or stalling. A bad result is hesitation or stalling.
  6. Manual gearbox: shift through every gear from cold, second included. A bad result is a crunch from first into second, or a vague, sloppy lever.

In detail

Rust

Rust is the body problem to check on every car. It starts at the sills, the joint between sill and floor, the wheel arches, the rear panel, the spare wheel well, the tailgate and the door seams. The fuel filler neck and the panel below the windscreen rot too. Look inside the wheel arches and under the car.

Cabrio roof

The soft top ages. Its fabric tears at the folds, and the seals let water in. The water reaches the cabin and can leave stains, damp seats and a musty smell. A new roof outer skin costs from about 400 EUR, and a full roof with fitting from about 750 EUR (Germany, 2005).

Oil leaks and oil use

The crank and cam seals leak. Sealing them is costly, and the gearbox input seal can leak too. Replace both seals when the gearbox is out. On the 1.8, the oil pan and the area around the cylinder head can leak. Blue smoke on overrun points to worn valve guide seals.

Suspension and steering wear

Springs can snap. The front and rear top mounts wear and knock over bumps. The bushes, shock absorbers and wishbones wear, and so do the steering rack and its bushes. Check the rack bushes before you blame the rack. Reproduction parts are cheap and widely available.

Fuel injection running problems

K-Jetronic is a mechanical fuel injection system. It needs knowledgeable maintenance. A GTI should idle smoothly from cold, settling just under 1,000 rpm without hesitation or stalling. With age, the part that meters the fuel can become troublesome.

Manual gearbox synchros and linkage

The synchros are the rings that let a gear engage smoothly. They wear with age and mileage. Listen for a crunch from first into second, especially when the car is cold. A worn shift linkage gives vague changes and long lever travel.

Recalls

Country Code Years What is done
USA (Rabbit, the US Golf 1) 81V113000 Built 1975 to 1979 Inspection. The fuel pump relay is moved off the relay board, and corroded relay boards or connectors are replaced.
USA (Rabbit, the US Golf 1) 81V058000 Built 1979 to 1980 A dealer fits a restrictor valve in the fuel filler pipe, at no charge.

Maintenance

  • Ask when the timing belt was last changed. If nobody knows, change it soon after you buy.
  • Engines built before August 1985 need regular valve clearance checks (the gap at the valves). Later engines have hydraulic tappets (self-adjusting valve parts) and need none.
