At a glance

  • Years: built 1998 to 2005. Early 1.0 and 1.4 petrols built before model year 2000 may lack the cold-weather heater.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because oil icing in cold weather can ruin an early 1.0 or 1.4 petrol, while the other faults are mostly rust and wear.
  • DIY: 3/5, because window switches and brake hoses are home jobs, but the rear axle and wheel bearings need a workshop.
  • Prefer: a car with the heater fitted, proof that the 2002 brake line recall was done, and a dry roof.
  • Avoid: an early 1.0 or 1.4 petrol without a heater, and a car with rust in the roof gutters.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.0 8V 50 PS petrol: cars built before model year 2000 can suffer oil intake icing. Otherwise no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.4 8V 60 PS petrol: the same oil intake icing applies to cars built before model year 2000. Otherwise no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.4 16V 75 PS petrol: the same oil intake icing applies to cars built before model year 2000. Otherwise no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy

  1. Heater on the early petrols. Ask whether the auxiliary heater ("Zusatzheizung") on the crankcase vent is fitted. Bad result: no heater on a 1998 or 1999 car, and no record of a retrofit.
  2. Rear axle. Look at the rear axle mounts and the rear suspension on a lift. Bad result: play, or damage at the mounts. Rear axle faults are more common than front ones.
  3. Front wheel bearings. Drive at speed and listen for noise from the wheel arches. Bad result: a noise from a front wheel, on a car with high mileage.
  4. Roof gutters and rails. Check the roof gutters and roof rails from inside and outside with a torch. Bad result: bubbling paint or rust at the gutter.
  5. Brake hoses. Look at the rubber brake hoses at each wheel. Ask when they were last changed. Bad result: cracks or swelling, or no record on a car more than four years old.
  6. Window switches. Use every window switch and the central locking, from the key and from inside. Bad result: a window drops, sticks or stops.
  7. Brake booster line recall. Ask a VW dealer to check the VIN for open campaigns, and ask for proof that the 2002 brake vacuum line check was done. Bad result: no proof, or a hard brake pedal.

In detail

Oil intake icing in cold weather

Condensation in the oil circuit can freeze below about minus 8 °C. The oil intake blocks and the bearings are damaged. Frequent short trips cause the condensation. In the worst case the engine is ruined. The sources give no repair price. AUTO BILD also reports the same fault on the Seat Arosa, which shares these engines.

Cause: condensation from short trips. Affected: 1.0 and 1.4 petrol. Fix: an auxiliary heater, fitted from model year 2000. Older cars can be retrofitted. CarWiki says VW fitted the heater as goodwill on affected cars.

Rear axle

The rear axle is the weak point of the Lupo, not the front. Rear axle faults come up more often than front ones. Repairs can be expensive, depending on the damage. The sources give no price.

Front wheel bearings

Front wheel bearings wear out on high-mileage cars. AUTO BILD warns about noise from the wheel arch. CarWiki puts a workshop repair for both bearings, with track alignment, at several hundred EUR (Germany, year not stated). AUTO BILD says the bearings cost some readers a lot of money.

Rust in roof gutters and roof rails

Rust forms in the roof gutters and on the roof rails. It can also form under the side window seals. Auto Express lists the roof gutters, sills and rear wheel arches. The sources give no repair price.

Window switches and regulators

Electric window switches and regulators fail. A window can stop, drop or stick. Auto Express says windows stop when the switches fail. CarWiki and AUTO BILD report broken electric window regulators. The sources give no repair price.

Brake hoses

CarWiki says brake hoses wear early, from about three to four years, and advises a full brake check. AUTO BILD calls the brake hoses a VW-typical weak point. Repairs are not expensive with good aftermarket parts. The sources give no exact price.

Recalls

Country Code Years What is done
Germany, also the UK per Auto Express not given Built 1998-2000 (ADAC); model years 1998-1999 (AUTO BILD); campaign 2002 Defect: the plastic brake booster vacuum line can crack at its connectors or become porous. The booster stops helping, so the pedal needs more force. The brakes still work. Remedy: lines checked and repaired if needed (ADAC); new pipes (Auto Express).

About 275,000 cars in Germany were affected according to AUTO BILD, and about 300,000 according to ADAC. Auto Express gives over 120,000 Lupos and Polos. Check open campaigns by VIN with a VW dealer.

Maintenance

  • On 1.0 and 1.4 petrols, avoid repeated short trips in freezing weather. Condensation in the oil circuit can freeze.
  • Have the brake hoses and brakes checked once the car is three to four years old. Hoses and discs wear early.
  • Have the front wheel bearings and track alignment checked when a noise comes from the wheel arch.
