At a glance

  • Years: the saloon and Variant were built from 1996 to 2005. The facelift (B5.5) runs from 2000.
  • Biggest risks: the 5-speed automatic gearbox, a skipped timing belt, and tie-rod ends on 1998 cars covered by a recall.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because automatic gearbox and engine damage are costly, but many faults are cheap.
  • DIY: 3/5, because timing belts and suspension arms are doable at home. Gearbox work needs a workshop.
  • Prefer: the 1.6 and 1.8T, and the 1.9 TDI Variant, as named by a 2002 AUTO BILD test. Avoid: automatics with no service record, and 1998 cars with no recall proof.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.8T 150 PS (AEB, ANB, APU, AWT): early cars had ignition coil faults that cause poor running. A 2005 Hella bulletin names the ANB from model years 1999 and 2000 and recommends new coils and a modified coil wiring harness (RAC, Hella).
  • 2.0 115 PS (ALT): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.9 TDI pump-injector (AJM, AVB, AVF, AWX): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 5-speed automatic (ZF 5HP19, 01V): the pressure solenoid, overheating and oil starvation are named in press tests and by owners.

Before you buy

  1. Automatic gearbox: check the fault codes with a scanner, then drive the car and watch for a knock on the 5-4 shift, slipping, or overheating. Ask for oil and filter records. A bad result is a knock, slipping, or no service record.
  2. Timing belt: ask for proof that the belt and water pump were changed within 60,000 km. A bad result is no proof on a diesel. A failed belt can wreck the engine.
  3. Tie rod ends: check whether the car was built 02-06/1998 and ask for proof of the free recall repair. A bad result is a car from that build with no proof.
  4. Front suspension: drive over bumps at low speed and listen for knocks. Look for creaks and squeaks from the front. A bad result is a knock or squeak.
  5. Water: check the front footwell carpets for damp, and look at the drains under the windscreen and battery tray. A bad result is damp carpets or blocked drains.
  6. Rust: check the wheel arches, sills, bonnet edge, headlight gaps and the tailgate on estates. A bad result is bubbling paint or soft metal.
  7. Ignition coils: on an early 1.8T, check for rough idle and poor throttle response, and ask whether the coils were changed. A scanner shows misfires. A bad result is a misfire or no records.

In detail

Automatic gearbox

Kolesa.ru says the 5-speed automatic (ZF 5HP19, code 01V) fails mostly at the linear pressure solenoid, and that a knock on the 5-4 shift usually means the solenoid is worn. After the 2000 facelift the gearbox is more prone to overheating. It wears the torque converter linings faster and needs more frequent oil changes, Kolesa.ru adds. A 2004 test calls the automatics prone to failure and hard to repair. A 2002 test says a failing selector is hard to diagnose, and only a full replacement helps. No cost is confirmed for this car.

Timing belt

The cam belt drives the camshafts. It must be changed on time. A skipped change can cause major engine damage, a 2002 AUTO BILD test says, and a 2004 test calls the damage expensive. AUTO BILD (2002) says VW cut the TDI interval to 60,000 km. Carwiki says to change the water pump at the same time, because the extra work is small. AUTO BILD gives about 400 EUR for a TDI V6 belt in 2002 and 580 EUR in 2004, with labour and VAT (Germany).

Tie rod ends recall

The tie-rod ends on cars of model year 1998 can wear early. In extreme cases the joint can pop out. The ADAC lists the build range as 02-06/1998. The recall started in 1999. VW replaced the tie-rod ends free of charge and wrote to owners. A 2002 AUTO BILD test said the recall was not finished yet.

Front suspension arms and bushings

Worn front joints cause knocks over bumps. The TÜV expert in the 2002 AUTO BILD test said the tie-rods and front control-arm joints wear at higher mileage. The Variant test describes squeaks and creaks, often from about 30,000 km. The cause is rubber bushings of defective material. VW changed the bush material in replacement parts. A 2004 test also reports creaking from about 30,000 km. Kolesa.ru says the bushings wear and can be replaced, while the ball joints cannot.

Water in the cabin

Water gets into the cabin through blocked drains. The drain under the windscreen (the water box) and the one under the battery can clog. AUTO BILD (2002 and 2004) reports these drain faults and says headlights can take in water. Kolesa.ru says the air-conditioning drain can also let water in. PistonHeads owners report that the comfort control module, under the passenger seat, can fail from water. Their fix: clear the drains, then dry out the module if it got wet.

Body rust

Kolesa.ru says pre-restyle cars show paint peeling where the zinc coating oxidises. Rust appears at the front wing arches, the headlight gaps, the rear door seams and the sills. The bonnet edge, lower door edges and suspension mounts also rust. Carwiki names light rust on the sunroof, headlight brackets and arches. On estates the tailgate can rust. AUTO BILD (2004) reports rust after four years. Check these areas before you pay.

Maintenance

  • Replace the timing belt and water pump every 60,000 km. A skipped belt can ruin the engine.
  • Change the automatic gearbox oil and filter more often than the fixed schedule. The 5-speed runs hot.
  • Clear the water drains under the windscreen and battery tray, and check the footwell after rain.
  • Check the front arms and bushings at about 30,000 km, and replace them at the first knock.
