At a glance

  • Years: built 1994 to 2001. The 6N2 facelift came in 09/1999.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because ADAC rates the Polo as average, and cold-weather oil icing can ruin an early 1.0 or 1.4 petrol.
  • DIY: 3/5, because the exhaust and the heater check are simple, but gearbox work needs a workshop.
  • Prefer: a car with proof of the 2002 brake line check, and on an early 1.0 or 1.4 petrol a fitted heater on the crankcase vent.
  • Avoid: an early 1.0 or 1.4 petrol with no heater and no proof, and a car with a noisy gearbox.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.05 45 PS petrol (1994-1996): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.0 50 PS petrol (1996-2001): cold-weather oil icing on cars built before model year 2000, see oil intake icing, and hydraulic lifter rattle.
  • 1.3 55 PS petrol (1994-1995): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.4 60 PS petrol (1995-2001): the same oil intake icing on cars built before model year 2000, and hydraulic lifter rattle.

Before you buy

  1. Heater on the early petrols. Ask for proof of the auxiliary heater ("Zusatzheizung") on the crankcase vent. Bad result: no heater on a car built before 2000, and no record of a retrofit.
  2. Gearbox noise and shifting. Drive through every gear, cold and warm, and listen for whining or squeaking. Bad result: whine, squeak or hard shifts.
  3. Gearbox oil level. Ask when the gearbox oil was last changed, and check the level on a lift. Bad result: low oil or no record.
  4. Exhaust and catalytic converter. Check the exhaust on a lift for holes, flaking rust and loose brackets. Bad result: holes or rust at the joints or the catalytic converter. No tools needed.
  5. Recall VIN check. Ask a VW dealer to check the VIN for open campaigns, and for proof that the 2002 brake booster line check was done. Bad result: no proof.
  6. Lifter rattle. Start the engine cold and listen at the top of the engine. Bad result: a ticking rattle that does not fade once the engine is warm.

In detail

Oil intake icing in cold weather

Condensation in the oil circuit can freeze below about minus 8 °C. The frozen oil intake blocks, and bearing damage follows. In the worst case the engine is ruined. Frequent short trips build up the condensation. The reports are about the Lupo, which shares the 1.0 and 1.4 petrols with the Polo. The 1.4 16V is not named.

Fix: a heater on the crankcase vent ("Zusatzheizung"), fitted by VW from model year 2000. Older cars can be retrofitted. VW paid goodwill on affected cars.

Cost: not stated.

Hydraulic lifter rattle

The hydraulic lifters (Hydrostößel) on the 1.0 and 1.4 petrols can rattle, according to ADAC. CarWiki names the same rattle on the Lupo, which shares these engines.

Fix: a workshop replaces the lifters, which ADAC calls a fairly simple job. After that the engine runs quietly again.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Gearbox wear

ADAC names the gearboxes as a weak point of the Polo: "partly wear-prone gearboxes". The PistonHeads press article on a Polo GTI reports whining and squeaking. The problems often start at the intermediate shaft bearing. Underfilled gearbox oil makes them worse.

Fix: a rebuild. The article advises budgeting for one. No part numbers.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Exhaust system and catalytic converter

Exhaust systems rust, according to ADAC. ADAC also lists catalytic converter faults in its data for 1995 and 1997-1998 cars. AUTO BILD names the exhaust as a problem on the Polo in 2006.

Cost, Germany, fitted, year not stated (ADAC): exhaust after the catalytic converter EUR 500 for the 1.4 16V, EUR 470 for the 1.6, EUR 450 for the 1.9 D and EUR 550 for the 1.4 TDI.

Cost, Germany, 2006 (AUTO BILD): silencer spare part EUR 190 for the 1.4 60 PS.

Recalls

Country Code Years What is done
Germany, 300,000 cars (other models too) not given Campaign 06/2002; in the UK cars built 05/1997 to 12/1999 The plastic brake booster vacuum line can crack at its connectors because of a manufacturing fault. The booster helps less, so the pedal needs more force. The brakes still work. Lines are checked and repaired if needed or replaced with new pipes.

Maintenance

  • Keep the gearbox oil at the right level. Underfilled oil is named as a cause of gearbox wear.
  • On the 1.0 and 1.4 petrols, avoid repeated short trips in freezing weather. Condensation in the oil circuit can freeze.
  • Check the exhaust and catalytic converter for rust.
  • Keep proof of the 2002 brake booster line check with the car.
