At a glance

  • Years: built 2010 to 2022. The facelift came in 2015.
  • Main faults: airbag gas generator recalls, sliding door motors, suspension wear and fast brake wear from the car's weight.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because TÜV finds about twice the average share of major faults at four to five years old and above-average shares at every age, and sliding door repairs are costly.
  • DIY: 2/5, because suspension and sliding door repairs need a workshop. The buyer checks need no tools unless marked.
  • Prefer: a car with airbag recall work on record and a full service book.
  • Avoid: a car with no proof of airbag recall work, or sliding doors that fail the switch test.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.4 TSI EA111 (CAV, CTH): the 2010 to 2015 twincharger petrol. Timing chain stretch on early TSI petrols is also reported by two sites. See the 1.4 TSI EA111 guide.
  • 1.4 TSI EA211 (CZD, CZE): the 2015 on petrol. The sources name no Sharan-specific fault for this engine. See the 1.4 TSI EA211 guide.
  • 2.0 TSI EA888 (CCZ, DED): 200 PS from 2010 to 2015 and 220 PS from 2015. The sources do not name this engine separately. See the 2.0 TSI EA888 guide.
  • 2.0 TDI EA189 (CFF, CFG): the 2010 to 2015 diesels at 115 to 170 PS. Euro 5 units need the emissions software update (see Recalls). EGR valve coking is named for the 2.0 TDI. See the 2.0 TDI EA189 guide.
  • 2.0 TDI EA288 (DFM): the 2015 on diesels at 115 to 184 PS. See the 2.0 TDI EA288 guide.
  • Automatic DSG (6-speed DQ250, 7-speed): no Sharan-specific DSG fault is named by two sources, so no gearbox guide is linked.

Before you buy

  1. Sliding doors. Open and close each sliding door by its switch and by hand. Test the B-pillar buttons and the central locking. A door that will not open, or a door control unit fault, can mean a motor, control unit or cable job, which is costly. Needs a scanner to read the door control unit fault codes.
  2. Suspension. Push down each corner and let go. The car should settle after one bounce. On a test drive, listen for knocks over bumps and noise when turning on the spot. These point to worn wishbone bearings, tie rods or dampers. No tools needed.
  3. Rust. Check the tailgate edges, the door seams and the lower edges of the doors for bubbling paint and rust. No tools needed.
  4. Airbag recalls. Ask a VW dealer to check the VIN for airbag campaigns. A car with open airbag work may not deploy its airbag in a crash. No tools needed.
  5. Brakes. Look through the wheels at the discs and pads. Heavy use wears them fast. Ask for the brake history. No tools needed.
  6. Headlights. Check the low beam aim, cloudy lenses and both indicators. A fault may need height adjustment or new headlights. No tools needed.
  7. Electrics and infotainment. Test the sat nav, Bluetooth pairing and the automatic lights in daylight. Light faults may need dealer recalibration with diagnostic equipment. Needs a scanner for the light recalibration.

In detail

Airbag gas generator recalls

Symptoms: in a crash the airbag may not fill with gas. Side airbag gas generator canisters may fail in an impact.

Cause: a production deviation and a faulty welded joint at the gas generator of the passenger airbag module (Austrian recall body). Auto Express says the UK side airbag campaign names the gas generator canisters.

Which cars: ÖAMTC gives Austria, 35 Sharan cars of model year 2017. Auto Express gives UK Sharan cars built 23 to 28 January 2015.

Fix: the passenger airbag is replaced at a specialist workshop. The UK remedy is not on the page.

Sliding door motors and control unit

Symptoms: a sliding door will not open, or it slides shut and back open with no obstruction. The door buttons flash and stay on. Central locking stops registering the sliding doors. One owner on PistonHeads reports the same door failure on a 2016 Alhambra twin, built by SEAT on the same line.

Cause: failed door motors, a faulty door control unit or damaged cables.

Which cars: Sharan and Alhambra twin, cases from 2016 and 2017. The RAC calls the electric sliding doors "particularly glitchy" on the post-2015 car.

Fix: one garage quoted a full replacement of the gear. Another said a fault means replacing all motors, sensors and related parts. AUTO BILD reports that in 2011 VW ran a workshop service action, not a safety recall, on Sharans built from week 17 to 31 December 2010 (8,600 cars in Germany) and on 1,821 Alhambras. It re-adjusted the sliding doors and reworked the front door cables. Check the service book for it.

Suspension wear

Symptoms: worn wishbone rubber bearings and tie rods, leaking dampers and broken springs. Carwiki says some parts fail after two to three years.

Cause: the wear of rubber bearings and the weight of the car. The TÜV report puts the fault rate for damaged wishbone bearings about ten times higher at four to five years old. T-online says the axle design is overloaded by the car's weight.

Which cars: all years. Spring breaks show up at the fourth inspection.

Fix: the worn parts are replaced. A wheel alignment follows the work.

Cost: no confirmed price. The TÜV report calls the front silent blocks expensive, but gives no figure.

Brake discs and pads

Symptoms: discs and pads wear faster than usual.

Cause: the weight of the car and heavy loads.

Which cars: all years, worse at high mileage.

Fix: replace the discs and pads.

Sources: carwiki: VW Sharan II problems, AUTO BILD: Sharan II TÜV report

Rust on door seams and tailgate

Symptoms: rust on the tailgate, the door seams and the lower edges of the doors.

Cause: Carwiki says the double door seals make it worse.

Which cars: all years named in the sources.

Sources: carwiki: VW Sharan II problems, AUTO BILD: Sharan II weak points

Headlights and indicators

Symptoms: the low beam goes out of aim, lenses turn cloudy, and the indicators fail at inspection. The front lighting is a weak point in all years.

Which cars: all years. The low beam is often out of aim from two to five years old. Indicators fail up to the fourth inspection.

Fix: adjust the headlight height, or replace the whole headlight when the lenses are cloudy.

Electrics and infotainment

Symptoms: RAC says the sat nav runs slowly and Bluetooth pairing fails for some owners. AUTO BILD calls the infotainment system unreliable. Auto Express says the automatic lights can come on in daylight.

Which cars: the post-2015 car in the RAC review, and the car in general in the AUTO BILD article.

Fix: Auto Express says a dealer can recalibrate the automatic lights with diagnostic equipment.

Maintenance

  • Brakes: check the discs and pads at each service. This heavy car wears them fast.
  • Suspension: from about four years old, have the wishbone bearings, tie rods and dampers checked at each inspection. Align the wheels after any suspension work.
  • Body: check the door seams and the tailgate for rust each year.
  • Headlights: check the low beam aim at each inspection.
