At a glance

  • Years: built 1996 to 2003. The facelift came in 2000. The S3 (1.8 T, 210 or 224 PS) is covered in the engine list.
  • The issues that matter: a broken TDI timing belt destroys the engine, clutch wear on manual cars, and rust on doors and roof edges.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because a snapped TDI timing belt is an engine loss and clutch and coil repairs cost real money.
  • DIY: 3/5, because belt, clutch and pump-injector jobs need a workshop, while window carriers and coils are simpler.
  • Prefer: 1.6 and 1.8 20V petrol cars with a service record, and TDI cars with proof of timing belt work.
  • Avoid: TDI cars with no timing belt proof, and 1.8 T cars with no coil or air mass meter work.

Before you buy

  1. Timing belt: on a 1.9 TDI, ask for proof of timing belt work by 60,000 to 90,000 km. A bad result is no proof.
  2. Pump-injector: on a 1.9 TDI pump-injector, ask for injector or pump-injector records. A bad result is no records on a high-mileage car.
  3. Clutch: on a manual car, ask when the clutch was last replaced. A bad result is judder or slipping, or no record.
  4. Coils: on a 1.8 T, listen for rough running and misfire at idle. A scanner shows misfire codes. A bad result is a misfire or no coil records.
  5. Air mass meter: on a 1.8 T or S3, test for lost power under load. A scanner shows the fault codes. A bad result is loss of power.
  6. Rust: check sills, door edges and the roof edge by hand. A bad result is bubbling paint or paint that breaks away.
  7. Windows: test every window up and down. A bad result is a window that stops, moves slowly or drops.

In detail

TDI timing belt

The timing belt drives the camshaft. On the 1.9 TDI, a broken belt destroys the engine. AUTO BILD wrote in 2002 that the belt is the TDI's weak point and that the interval was cut from 90,000 km to 60,000 km. AutoScout24 gives the same 60,000 km or six years for the 110 PS TDI. ADAC lists 90,000 km for the 1.9 TDI. Ask for proof of the belt change. A belt change costs 570 EUR (ADAC, Germany, 2022, brand workshop including labour).

Clutch wear

AUTO BILD calls the clutch a weak point. Its test car was finished at about 87,000 km. The clutch is a common job on manual cars. ADAC prices a clutch job at 810 EUR for the 1.6 and 820 EUR for other variants (Germany, 2022).

Turbo ignition coils

The ignition coils on the 1.8 T can fail. RAC reports issues with the coils on the 1.8 T engine. carwiki says some drivers of the S3 had coil problems. A failed coil causes a misfire and rough running. The price for coils and leads is a Golf 4 figure from Gebrauchtwagenberater, for the same 1.8 T engine: 100 to 200 EUR (Germany, year not stated).

Air mass meter

The air mass meter (MAF) measures the air into the engine. AutoScout24 says air mass meters are prone to failure on the turbo engines. carwiki says the S3 needs the air mass meter, diverter valve and boost control parts changed more often than on other cars, and that the usual symptom is less engine power. No price is confirmed.

TDI pump-injector units

This engine is the Golf 4 1.9 TDI pump-injector, which the A3 shares. Its injectors can fail, and high-mileage pump-injector units may need an overhaul. An overhaul costs 500 to 1,100 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, Germany, year not stated, Golf 4 with the same engine).

Rust on doors and roof edges

Sources disagree on rust, and the years of the pages matter. ADAC lists doors as prone to rust on the used car, and carwiki says the first generation often had rust at the roof seam, the door edges and the sill guard. Carthrottle says the roof-rail sealant breaks down and lets in water. carwiki adds that rust largely disappeared with the first facelift. AUTO BILD in 2002 said rust was no issue thanks to full galvanising, and AutoScout24 in 2010 said rust was no issue without earlier damage. No cost is confirmed.

Window regulators

The window regulator clips are plastic and often fail, so the window stops working. Carthrottle calls the fault quite common. AUTO BILD in 2002 says the regulators can fail in wet weather, and AutoScout24 in 2010 says the power windows can fail. No cost is confirmed.

Recalls

No recall was found in the sources read. Check open campaigns for the car's VIN with an Audi dealer before you buy.

Maintenance

  • Change the TDI timing belt every 60,000 km or six years, the interval the 2002 and 2010 sources give. ADAC lists 90,000 km.
  • Keep the roof-rail sealant intact. It breaks down and lets in water, which starts corrosion.
