At a glance
- Years: built 1994 to 2001 as saloon and Avant, including S4 and RS4. The facelift came in 1999.
- Reliability: 3/5. ADAC rates the 1.9 TDI as a long-runner, but the 2.5 TDI camshafts, the timing belt and door rust need checks.
- DIY: 3/5. Oil, filters and brakes are home work. Camshafts, the injection pump and the timing belt need a workshop.
- Prefer: a 1.9 TDI or a 1.8T. ADAC recommends the 1.8T as especially durable.
- Avoid: a 2.5 TDI V6 without proof that the camshafts and injection pump are sound.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.6 (ADP, AHL, ANA, ARM, ALZ; 101-102 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 1.8 20V (ADR, APT, ARG, AJP; 125 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 1.8T (AEB, APU, ANB, AWT, AJL): ADAC recommends it as especially durable. No fault confirmed in the sources read.
- V6 petrol (2.6, 2.8, 2.4, 2.8 30V): ADAC finds them smooth but weak when pulling away and thirsty at the pump. No fault confirmed.
- S4 (AGB, AZB): ADAC says they are rarely found in original condition. No fault confirmed.
- RS4 (ASJ, AZR): the same ADAC remark applies. No fault confirmed.
- 1.9 TDI (1Z, AHU, AHH, AFN, AVG, AJM, ATJ): ADAC calls them long-runners, often past 300,000 km. The timing belt is the main risk.
- 2.5 TDI V6 (AFB, AKN): the camshafts, rocker arms and injection pump fail. ADAC says it is not as tough as the 1.9 TDI.
- 5-speed manual: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 6-speed manual: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 4-speed automatic (01N): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 5-speed ZF automatic (5HP19, quattro): no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy
- 2.5 TDI camshafts: ask a specialist to check the camshafts and rocker arms. The rocker cover has to come off. A loud tapping from the top of the engine, or lost power, is a bad sign. Ask whether revised camshafts are fitted.
- 2.5 TDI injection pump: ask for proof of pump work. The Bosch VP44 pump is one of the most common failures. The sources name no home check for it, so a specialist must test it.
- Timing belt on a TDI: ask for proof of the last belt change, every 90,000-120,000 km. A TDI needs the whole front end off for this job, so no proof is a bad sign.
- Front suspension: lift the car and check the front arms and ball joints for play. A knock over bumps or a clatter from the front axle is a bad sign. No scanner needed.
- Door bottoms: check the lower edges of the doors and the area behind the trim strips for bubbling paint or rust. No tools needed.
- Open recalls: ask a dealer to check open campaigns by VIN.

In detail
Front suspension arms and joints
ADAC calls the front axle joints chronically worn, and says the front axle is a weak point. AUTO BILD found that nearly all A4 from 1994 needed wishbone replacement. The early ball joints were aluminium, and from 2000 Audi used steel. Owners on PistonHeads report worn ball joints, links and bushes that rattle over bumps.
The fix is to replace the worn wishbones and joints. Cost: no confirmed price.

Door rust at lower edges and behind trim strips
ADAC says the doors rust badly at the lower edges and behind the trim strips. A PistonHeads owner reports the rubber strips at the door bottoms rust and crumble, because they sit on steel clips.
Cost: no confirmed price.

2.5 TDI V6 camshafts and rocker arms
A loud tapping from the top of the engine, and lost power. In bad cases a rocker arm jumps out of its seat (AutoHints).
The oil passages in the heads are too narrow, and the camshaft material is weak (AutoHints). The engines named are the AFB and AKN 2.5 TDI V6. A 2008 AUTO BILD test of the A4 B6, which has a later version of this engine, also reports worn camshafts, with no Audi recall at the time.
The fix is to replace all four camshafts, rocker arms and hydraulic lifters. AutoHints calls this extremely expensive, with no price given. A car with revised camshafts is the safer buy.
Cost: no confirmed price.

2.5 TDI V6 injection pump
The Bosch VP44 pump is one of the most common and most expensive failures on this engine. Its control module, the PSG5, overheats (AutoHints). Kolesa.ru calls the injection pump and timing mechanism of the 2.5 TDI not durable. Kolesa.ru writes about the same engine in the A4 B6.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Timing belt on TDI engines
If the belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons (AutoHints). AUTO BILD names the four-cylinder TDI as still a cause of engine damage from the belt.
The belt job needs the front end taken apart. AutoHints says the bumper, headlights and radiator come off. AUTO BILD says the whole front end must be removed on a TDI.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Maintenance
- Timing belt: change it every 90,000-120,000 km. AutoHints gives 120,000 km as the factory interval and advises 90,000 km.
