1. On a diesel, listen for turbo noise and check for smoke on acceleration. A smell of diesel in the cabin points to worn injector seals.
2. Listen for creaks over bumps, and check the front end for play. Worn drop-links are a cheap fix.
3. Check the brakes for wear, and ask when the rear drums were last checked. Seized brakes are a known fault.
4. Check the sills, wheel arches, tailgate and exhaust for rust. CarWiki says cars built in 2004 and 2005 are the worst.
5. Lift the mats and check the carpets, footwells, boot and door bottoms for damp. Check that the pollen filter seals are fitted.
6. Ask whether any recall work was done, and ask the dealer to check open recalls by VIN.
