- Generation guide Ford Fiesta Mk6 (2001-2008): known problems and buying guide
The petrol engines are durable, but the Durashift gearbox and the diesel turbos are the costly risks. Check both, then rust and footwells.

Before you buy this car
From the generation guide
- Test a cold start and check for misfire. A warning lamp that stays on, or glows with loss of power, points to a coil or plug fault. A scanner shows misfire codes.
- Listen for creaks over bumps, and check the front end for play. Worn drop-links are a cheap fix.
- Check the brakes for wear, and ask when the rear drums were last checked. Seized brakes are a known fault.
- Check the sills, wheel arches, tailgate and exhaust for rust. CarWiki says cars built in 2004 and 2005 are the worst.
- Lift the mats and check the carpets, footwells, boot and door bottoms for damp. Check that the pollen filter seals are fitted.
- Ask whether any recall work was done, and ask the dealer to check open recalls by VIN.
