The petrol engines are durable, but the Durashift gearbox and the diesel turbos are the costly risks. Check both, then rust and footwells.

At a glance

  • Years: built from late 2001 to 2008. The facelift came in October 2005.
  • Most common: Durashift gearbox jerks, diesel turbo and injector wear, ignition coil packs and plugs, rust, and water in the footwells.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because the petrol engines are durable, but the Durashift gearbox and the diesels need care.
  • DIY: 3/5, because drop-links and plugs are simple jobs, but alternator work means removing the headlamp (kolesa.ru), and gearbox and turbo faults are costly.
  • Prefer: a petrol car with a manual gearbox and a timing belt record.
  • Avoid: Durashift cars that jerk on gear changes, and diesels with no turbo or injector history.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol: durable, with faults mostly at high mileage. Watch the ignition coils, the starter and alternator, and the timing belt record.
  • 1.3 petrol: the coil and plug faults above apply.
  • 1.4 and 1.6 TDCi diesel: avoid. Turbochargers and injectors wear.
  • Durashift EST automated manual (1.4 cars): avoid. Jerky shifts and clutch wear.

Before you buy

  1. Drive the car in traffic and pull away from rest several times. Jerks, slow or late shifts, or a clutch that does not bite smoothly point to a Durashift fault. A scanner is needed to read gearbox fault codes.
  2. On a diesel, listen for turbo noise and check for smoke on acceleration. A smell of diesel in the cabin points to worn injector seals.
  3. Ask for the timing belt record, with date and mileage. Without proof of a change, treat the belt as overdue and budget for it.
  4. Test a cold start and check for misfire. A warning lamp that stays on, or glows with loss of power, points to a coil or plug fault. A scanner shows misfire codes.
  5. Test a cold start. A slow crank or a charge light that stays on after starting points to the starter or alternator.
  6. Listen for creaks over bumps, and check the front end for play. Worn drop-links are a cheap fix.
  7. Check the brakes for wear, and ask when the rear drums were last checked. Seized brakes are a known fault.
  8. Check the sills, wheel arches, tailgate and exhaust for rust. CarWiki says cars built in 2004 and 2005 are the worst.
  9. Lift the mats and check the carpets, footwells, boot and door bottoms for damp. Check that the pollen filter seals are fitted.
  10. Ask whether any recall work was done, and ask the dealer to check open recalls by VIN.

In detail

Durashift gearbox jerks and clutch wear

Symptoms: jerky gear changes and slow shifts. kolesa.ru adds unpredictable shift logic and a bite point that needs adjusting often. A test drive from rest shows whether the clutch engages smoothly.

Cause: Gebrauchtwagenberater names high clutch wear. Press tests point at the clutch unit and the shift control.

Which cars: 1.4 petrol and 1.4 TDCi cars with the Durashift EST automated manual. The 1.6 has a conventional gearbox.

Sources: Auto Express, RAC Drive, kolesa.ru, AutoScout24

Ignition coil packs and plugs

Symptoms: the engine warning lamp stays on, the engine misfires or runs rough, and power drops.

Cause: the coil pack fails. RAC Drive names it as the likely cause when the lamp stays on or the engine misfires. CarWiki names ignition cables as a weak point.

Which cars: petrol cars. The 1.25 and the 1.3 are named.

Sources: RAC Drive, Auto Express, CarWiki, DRIVE2

Diesel turbo and injector wear

Symptoms: turbo noise, and smoke on acceleration. A diesel smell in the cabin. kolesa.ru says that on the 1.6 TDCi, injectors clog and the washers burn through.

Cause: AUTO BILD and Gebrauchtwagenberater name turbocharger wear. Gebrauchtwagenberater says worn injector seals cause the smell. kolesa.ru also reports injector clogging and carbon on the pistons of the 1.6 TDCi.

Which cars: 1.4 TDCi (68 PS) and 1.6 TDCi (90 PS).

Sources: AUTO BILD, Gebrauchtwagenberater, kolesa.ru, AutoScout24

Water in footwells and door seals

Symptoms: damp carpets, a wet front passenger footwell, and a damp boot or spare-wheel well.

Cause: the pollen filter seals are often fitted wrong. Door and window seals leak, and kolesa.ru says roof seams can leak under the trim. Carbuyer adds that a failed water seal or an air-conditioning leak can also wet the front carpets.

Which cars: all.

Fix: refit the pollen filter seals. RAC Drive and Auto Express call this fix easy and say it needs no extra spend.

Sources: RAC Drive, Auto Express, AutoScout24, Carbuyer, kolesa.ru

Rust

Symptoms: rust on the door bottoms, wheel-arch edges, sills, tailgate and exhaust. Underbody corrosion with age.

Cause: CarWiki says rust-proofing was saved on. kolesa.ru notes unsealed front arch seams and rust under the moulding.

Which cars: all. The 2004 and 2005 builds are the worst, according to CarWiki.

Sources: CarWiki, kolesa.ru, AutoScout24, Gebrauchtwagenberater

Front suspension knocks

Symptoms: creaks and knocks over bumps.

Cause: worn front drop-links. kolesa.ru says stabiliser struts wear sooner than the main suspension parts, which last about 150,000 km.

Which cars: all.

Fix: replace the front drop-links. RAC Drive calls it a cheap fix.

Sources: Auto Express, RAC Drive, Carbuyer, kolesa.ru

Brake wear and seized drums

Symptoms: brakes that wear fast, rear drum brakes that seize, and, per kolesa.ru, caliper slide pins that seize after five to six years.

Which cars: all.

Sources: AutoScout24, kolesa.ru, Gebrauchtwagenberater

Starter motor and alternator

Symptoms: a slipping alternator belt, per kolesa.ru. Gebrauchtwagenberater names starter and alternator faults at high mileage.

Cause, per kolesa.ru: the alternator has no belt tensioner, so a loose belt slips. The alternator has a short life.

Which cars, per kolesa.ru: 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol with 16 valves.

Fix, per kolesa.ru: replacing the alternator means removing the headlamp. The regulator is only sold with the whole unit.

Recalls

Country Code Years What is done
UK not given 2004-2005 Fuel return pipe may leak on cars built from mid-July 2004 to mid-February 2005. Carbuyer and Auto Express both report it. Work not named.
UK not given Built late August to early September 2002 Rear brake backplate may separate from the rear axle. Carbuyer and Auto Express both report it. Work not named.

Other campaigns may be open. Ask the dealer to check open recalls by VIN.

Maintenance

  • Timing belt (1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol): replace the belt at the limit in the service book. A car with no proof of change needs one before you drive it far.
  • Pollen filter seals: keep them fitted. Wet footwells follow when they are not.
