1. Turn the steering from lock to lock. A knock from the rack or a whine on full lock means the steering or its joints may be worn.
2. Push each wheel up and down and listen for knocks. Worn ball joints and rear bushes give knocks over bumps.
3. Check the oil level on the dipstick, and look under the engine and gearbox for oil. A car that loses oil needs a leak check before purchase.
4. Look at the bottom edges of the doors and the tailgate for bubbles or lifting paint.
5. Check that the car starts with both keys. The immobiliser can fail, see Immobiliser.
6. Check every campaign in the Recalls table by VIN. Ask the seller for proof that the work was done.
