At a glance

  • Saloon, hatchback and estate, built 2007 to 2014, front-wheel drive only.
  • Common faults: oil loss, rust in the door and tailgate edges, and worn suspension and steering joints. Diesels add DPF, EGR and turbo faults and a costly clutch and flywheel job.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because oil use, diesel DPF and EGR faults and a clutch and flywheel job are costly.
  • DIY: 2/5, because clutch, flywheel, EGR and turbo work needs a garage. Few simple jobs are listed.
  • Prefer: a 2.0 TDCi with proof of DPF and EGR work, or a 1.6 EcoBoost 160 PS with the clutch recall done.
  • Avoid: a car that uses or leaks oil, has rust in the door or tailgate edges, or a diesel with no DPF or EGR history.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.6 Ti-VCT petrol (RHBA, PNBA, KGBA): the cam adjuster can stick. See 1.6 Ti-VCT cam adjuster.
  • 1.6 EcoBoost petrol (JTBB, facelift): the clutch recall covers manual cars. No other fault is confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 Duratec petrol (TBBB, also flexi-fuel and LPG): no fault confirmed in the sources read. A PistonHeads owner reports oil use on a 2011 2.0 petrol.
  • 2.0 EcoBoost petrol (TNCF, TPBA): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.3 Duratec petrol automatic (SEBA): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.5 five-cylinder turbo petrol (HUBA, to 2010): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.8 TDCi diesel (FFBA, QYBA, KHBA, TYBA): no engine fault confirmed in the sources read. The diesel items under Known issues also apply.
  • 1.6 TDCi diesel (U3CA, facelift): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 TDCi diesel (AZBA, QXBA, UFBB, TXBB): EGR valve and turbo faults, and DPF clogging. See EGR valve and turbocharger.
  • 2.2 TDCi diesel (Q4BA, KNBA): the injector seal recall covers these engines. See the Recalls table.
  • 5-speed manual (IB5, petrol): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual (MMT6): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed automatic (Aisin AWF21): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed Powershift wet dual-clutch (MPS6, 2010 on): judder, harsh shifts and clutch wear, see Powershift MPS6 gearbox.

Before you buy

  1. Drive from rest and up a hill. Judder, slip or grinding means the clutch or flywheel may need replacing. Ask for the invoice.
  2. Turn the steering from lock to lock. A knock from the rack or a whine on full lock means the steering or its joints may be worn.
  3. Push each wheel up and down and listen for knocks. Worn ball joints and rear bushes give knocks over bumps.
  4. Check the oil level on the dipstick, and look under the engine and gearbox for oil. A car that loses oil needs a leak check before purchase.
  5. Ask for proof of DPF work. A DPF warning light, or a regeneration fault that a scanner reads, means the filter is clogged. Needs a scanner to read the fault.
  6. On a 2.0 TDCi, check for lost power. Ask whether EGR and turbo work was done. Lost power or a limp mode points to the EGR valve or turbo.
  7. On a 1.6 Ti-VCT, ask whether the cam adjuster has been replaced. A sticking adjuster is named for this engine.
  8. Look at the bottom edges of the doors and the tailgate for bubbles or lifting paint.
  9. Check that the car starts with both keys. The immobiliser can fail, see Immobiliser.
  10. On a Powershift car, pull away gently from cold and drive through all gears. Judder, harsh shifts or a warning light are bad signs. Ask for a gearbox oil change record.
  11. Check every campaign in the Recalls table by VIN. Ask the seller for proof that the work was done.
