At a glance

  • Saloon, hatchback and estate, built 2007 to 2014, front-wheel drive only.
  • Common faults: oil loss, rust in the door and tailgate edges, and worn suspension and steering joints. Diesels add DPF, EGR and turbo faults and a costly clutch and flywheel job.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because oil use, diesel DPF and EGR faults and a clutch and flywheel job are costly.
  • DIY: 2/5, because clutch, flywheel, EGR and turbo work needs a garage. Few simple jobs are listed.
  • Prefer: a 2.0 TDCi with proof of DPF and EGR work, or a 1.6 EcoBoost 160 PS with the clutch recall done.
  • Avoid: a car that uses or leaks oil, has rust in the door or tailgate edges, or a diesel with no DPF or EGR history.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.6 Ti-VCT petrol (RHBA, PNBA, KGBA): the cam adjuster can stick. See 1.6 Ti-VCT cam adjuster.
  • 1.6 EcoBoost petrol (JTBB, facelift): the clutch recall covers manual cars. No other fault is confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 Duratec petrol (TBBB, also flexi-fuel and LPG): no fault confirmed in the sources read. A PistonHeads owner reports oil use on a 2011 2.0 petrol.
  • 2.0 EcoBoost petrol (TNCF, TPBA): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.3 Duratec petrol automatic (SEBA): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.5 five-cylinder turbo petrol (HUBA, to 2010): no fault confirmed in the sources read.

  • 1.6 TDCi diesel (U3CA, facelift): no fault confirmed in the sources read.

  • 2.2 TDCi diesel (Q4BA, KNBA): the injector seal recall covers these engines. See the Recalls table.
  • 5-speed manual (IB5, petrol): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual (MMT6): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed automatic (Aisin AWF21): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed Powershift wet dual-clutch (MPS6, 2010 on): judder, harsh shifts and clutch wear, see Powershift MPS6 gearbox.

Before you buy

  1. Drive from rest and up a hill. Judder, slip or grinding means the clutch or flywheel may need replacing. Ask for the invoice.
  2. Turn the steering from lock to lock. A knock from the rack or a whine on full lock means the steering or its joints may be worn.
  3. Push each wheel up and down and listen for knocks. Worn ball joints and rear bushes give knocks over bumps.
  4. Check the oil level on the dipstick, and look under the engine and gearbox for oil. A car that loses oil needs a leak check before purchase.
  5. Ask for proof of DPF work. A DPF warning light, or a regeneration fault that a scanner reads, means the filter is clogged. Needs a scanner to read the fault.
  6. On a 2.0 TDCi, check for lost power. Ask whether EGR and turbo work was done. Lost power or a limp mode points to the EGR valve or turbo.
  7. On a 1.6 Ti-VCT, ask whether the cam adjuster has been replaced. A sticking adjuster is named for this engine.
  8. Look at the bottom edges of the doors and the tailgate for bubbles or lifting paint.
  9. Check that the car starts with both keys. The immobiliser can fail, see Immobiliser.
  10. On a Powershift car, pull away gently from cold and drive through all gears. Judder, harsh shifts or a warning light are bad signs. Ask for a gearbox oil change record.
  11. Check every campaign in the Recalls table by VIN. Ask the seller for proof that the work was done.

In detail

Clutch and dual-mass flywheel (diesel)

Symptoms look like a worn clutch: judder on pull-off and grinding when shifting. repareo names dual-mass flywheel problems for this model. The example car is a 2.2 TDCi, and the flywheel is named as a diesel weak point at high mileage or short trips. The fix is a new clutch and flywheel, and repareo advises replacing both together.

Suspension and steering joints

Symptoms: knocks over bumps, play in ball joints, a knock from the steering rack, and heavy or whining steering. Cause: wear in joints and bushes. PistonHeads owners report rear trailing arm bushes splitting at high mileage. Test inspections flag ball joint play often. The fix is to replace the worn part.

Oil loss

Symptoms: the engine or gearbox uses or leaks oil. AUTO BILD calls oil loss a chronic Mondeo problem. AutoScout24 sees oil loss at the engine and gearbox often in TÜV results. gebrauchtwagenberater names the 2.0 TDCi, and a PistonHeads owner reports oil use on a 2011 2.0 petrol. Cause and fix are not stated. No cost is confirmed.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

Symptoms: the filter clogs with soot. carwiki names clogged diesel particulate filters on the Mondeo up to 2012. gebrauchtwagenberater names the DPF as a weak point at high mileage or on short trips. Cause: soot build-up. Fix and cost are not stated. Ask for proof of filter work.

EGR valve and turbocharger (2.0 TDCi)

Symptoms: the EGR valve sticks from coking, which causes lost power or emergency running. On the Focus Mk2, which shares the 2.0 TDCi, AUTO BILD and a Russian article (Kolesa) name a clogged EGR valve and a turbo that uses oil. gebrauchtwagenberater names EGR and turbo among diesel weak points for the Mondeo, and a PistonHeads owner describes an EGR and intake gummed up with black deposits. Cause: coking and oil build-up. Fix and cost are not stated.

Rust in door and tailgate edges

Symptoms: rust in the hemmed edges of the doors and the tailgate. Owners and magazines reported it from 2007. Cause: a supplier's sealant at the cut edges. Ford repaired the affected parts, mostly under warranty. AutoScout24 sees rust only in single cases. No cost is confirmed.

1.6 Ti-VCT cam adjuster

Symptoms: occasional problems with camshaft adjustment. gebrauchtwagenberater reports this on the 1.6 Ti-VCT. AUTO BILD reports on the Focus Mk2, which shares this engine, that Ti-VCT camshaft adjustment can stick. Cause, fix and cost are not stated.

Powershift MPS6 gearbox

The Mondeo uses the wet 6-speed Powershift (Getrag 6DCT450), not the dry box of the smaller Fords. Symptoms: judder when pulling away, harsh shifts and now and then limp mode. Causes named: the mechatronic control unit, clutch wear, old gearbox oil and software. gebrauchtwagenberater says plastic spacers in the clutch basket break and need a new clutch, and that first faults can come before 100,000 km. Fix: read the gearbox memory, update the software and change the oil. A mechanical fault needs a repaired or new mechatronic unit, or a new clutch pack. Both German sites advise an oil change by 60,000 km. No clutch pack price is confirmed.

Immobiliser

Symptoms: the immobiliser can fail, and gebrauchtwagenberater says it sometimes does. carwiki names defective immobilisers, mainly on 2007 to 2010 cars. Cause and fix are not stated. No cost is confirmed.

Maintenance

  • Check the oil level at every service, and look for leaks under the engine and gearbox. Oil loss is a known problem.
  • Clean the hemmed edges of the doors and tailgate, and treat any rust early.
  • Replace worn rear trailing arm bushes before they split.
  • Short trips clog the DPF faster. Ask for proof of filter work.
  • When the clutch is replaced, replace the dual-mass flywheel at the same time.
