- Turn the steering from lock to lock. A knock from the rack or a whine on full lock means the steering or its joints may be worn.
- Push each wheel up and down and listen for knocks. Worn ball joints and rear bushes give knocks over bumps.
- Check the oil level on the dipstick, and look under the engine and gearbox for oil. A car that loses oil needs a leak check before purchase.
- Look at the bottom edges of the doors and the tailgate for bubbles or lifting paint.
