At a glance
- Years: hatchback W177 and saloon V177, built 2018 to 2025.
- Reliability: 3/5. Many recalls, most of them small. The brake and ESP campaigns and the gearbox matter most.
- DIY: 2/5. Checks need no tools, but brake, ESP (stability control) and gearbox work needs a workshop.
- Prefer: a car with dealer proof that the 2018-2019 brake and ESP recalls were done, and oil invoices.
- Avoid: a car with no proof of the brake recalls, a gearbox warning, or low oil at a standstill check.
Engines and gearboxes
- Petrol M282 1.3 (A 160, A 180, A 200): no guide. Three German sites report higher oil use, and no official Mercedes action was found. Two sites mention carbon deposits from direct injection; one calls them normal.
- A 250 e plug-in hybrid: no source names a hybrid-system fault, so none is listed.
- 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox (petrol and K9K): the faults are in the 7G-DCT guide. The gearbox oil recall is in the Recalls table.
Before you buy
- Ask a Mercedes dealer to check open campaigns by VIN. Check the brake fluid level and look for wet fluid at the rear brake hoses. Bad: low fluid, a wet hose, or no record of the 2018 rear-axle repair.
- Press the brake pedal at a standstill. It should feel firm and not move sideways. Bad: a hard or loose pedal, or no record of the brake-pedal campaign.
- Look for a brake or ESP warning light. A scanner reads ESP and ABS (anti-lock brakes) fault codes. Bad: a warning, or no record of the ESP unit replacement. Needs a scanner.
- Ask for proof that the air conditioning drain-hose campaign was done. Run the A/C and check that it cools and the car starts without warnings. Bad: no proof, or electrical warnings. Needs a scanner for electrical fault memory.
- On a cold test drive, pull away gently at low speed. Bad: jerks, a gearbox warning or limp mode (reduced power). A scanner reads gearbox fault codes.
- Check the oil level on the dipstick at a standstill. Ask for oil invoices that name the grade. Bad: low oil between services, or no record of the grade.
- Look around the turbocharger and its feed pipe for oil. Bad: oil on the turbo or its pipe.
- Check the ISOFIX (child seat anchor) brackets on the rear seats, and ask for proof of the campaign on cars built in 2020. Bad: no proof for a car built July to September 2020.
