At a glance

  • Years: 2016 to 2023, with a facelift in 2020 (MBUX infotainment). Diesels OM654 and OM656, petrol M274, 9G-Tronic automatic.
  • Reliability: 3/5. At the first German TÜV test (2-3 years) about 92 % pass without defects, and the ADAC calls the breakdown record fairly good. Diesel parts, the timing chain and air suspension are costly, and the recall count is high.
  • DIY: 2/5. Diesel jobs and air suspension need a scanner (a diagnostic tool) and workshop time.
  • Biggest risks: the coolant pump on OM654 and OM656 diesels (fire risk), the timing chain and rocker arms on OM654 diesels, and NOx sensor faults.
  • Prefer: a full stamped service history, proof that recall work is done (check by VIN), and OM654 engines with the 2018 rocker arms. Avoid: diesels with no proof of the coolant recall or the timing chain work, and cars with air suspension warnings.

Engines and gearboxes

  • OM654 1.6 and 2.0 diesel (E 160 d, E 200 d, E 220 d, E 300 d): Weak points are the timing chain and the rocker arms. The rocker fault runs up to engine number 80278366. Coolant pump: see the table.
  • OM656 2.9 six-cylinder diesel (E 350 d, E 400 d): A faulty coolant pump can let coolant into the brake vacuum circuit. Check open recalls by VIN.
  • M274 2.0 petrol (E 200, E 250, E 300, E 350 e): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 9G-Tronic automatic (almost all cars): Jerky shifts when the gearbox oil service is neglected.
  • Carbon build-up (petrol and diesel): Clogged intake valves and injectors at high mileage, reported by two press sources. No price given.

Before you buy

  1. Coolant pump: Ask a Mercedes dealer to check the VIN for open recalls, including the coolant pump. Look for coolant loss or a hot engine bay. Bad result: an open campaign or coolant loss.
  2. Timing chain (OM654): Listen for a rattle in the first five seconds after a cold start. A scanner reads codes P0016, P0017 and P0008. Ask for proof of the 2022 recall work. Bad result: a rattle, an uneven idle or stored codes.
  3. Rocker arms (OM654): Check the engine number. Engines up to 80278366 had the fault unless the 2018 rocker arms were fitted. Listen for ticking or a rumble at idle. Bad result: ticking or a rumble from under the bonnet.
  4. NOx sensors and AdBlue (diesels): Ask for the full stamped service history. A scanner reads NOx and dosing faults. Bad result: stored NOx codes or AdBlue warnings.
  5. Air suspension: Park the car overnight and check whether a corner sinks. A scanner reads level and compressor faults. Bad result: a low corner or a compressor that runs all the time.
  6. 9G-Tronic gearbox: Drive in town and pull away from a stop. Ask for the gearbox fluid service record; the interval is 80,000-100,000 km. A scanner shows stored gearbox faults. Bad result: jerks, late shifts when cold, or no record.
  7. Infotainment and touch controls: Test every screen, the voice control, CarPlay and the steering-wheel touch buttons. A scanner reads the stored faults. Bad result: freezes, reboots or dead buttons.
  8. Front axle: On a lift, check the ball joints and wishbone bushes for play. Drive over bumps and listen. Bad result: play, or knocks from the front.
  9. Paint and rattles: Check the paint for scratches and thin spots in good light. Listen for rattles from the dash and door cards on a rough road. Bad result: thin or flaking paint, or rattles.

In detail

Coolant pump leak into the vacuum circuit

Symptoms: the brake pedal feels hard or sluggish, and the engine check lamp comes on now and then. The engine bay can run hot.

Cause: a faulty vacuum-controlled coolant pump lets coolant into the vacuum circuit, the vacuum that helps the brakes. Oil can enter through the tandem pump. Fire risk is not fully excluded.

Which cars: OM654 diesels from 2016 and OM656 six-cylinder diesels.

Fix: a parts supplier lists replacing the coolant pump, the tandem pump, the vacuum solenoid valve and all vacuum lines. Check the vacuum system for contamination and clean it. Clear the fault memory and test the brakes.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Timing chain rattle (OM654 diesel)

Symptoms: a rattle for two to five seconds after a cold start, an uneven idle and loss of power at high revs. Garages read codes P0016, P0017 and P0008.

Cause: the chain stretches. The chain sits on the gearbox side, so the repair is complicated and costly. The risk is highest on early cars, up to about 2018.

Which cars: OM654 diesels built from January 2016 to February 2021. Kfz-Dietrich reports that a cheap replacement chain can stretch again after 40,000-60,000 km.

Typical km: 120,000-180,000 km (Kfz-Dietrich).

Fix: a new chain set and tensioner. A 2022 recall covered the chain on 2016-2021 builds. Check that the work was done.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Rocker arm wear (OM654)

Symptoms: ticking at idle, a rumble from under the bonnet and a rough idle. Worn rocker arms (the valve levers in the cylinder head) can break or crack.

Cause: premature wear of the roller rocker arms and the hydraulic lifters that work with them.

Which cars: OM654 engines up to engine number 80278366. The improved rocker arms came in around June 2018.

Typical km: wear starts at 100,000-120,000 km (auto motor und sport) or 130,000-140,000 km (auto.mail.ru).

Fix: fit the improved rocker arms. If the fault is caught early, the rockers and lifters are replaced. If it is left, the camshaft and its carrier may need replacing too.

Cost: no confirmed price.

AdBlue and NOx sensor faults

Symptoms: warnings from the AdBlue system (urea fluid for the exhaust) and from the NOx sensors (they measure exhaust gases). Failing sensors and dosing faults are the usual reports.

Cause: the NOx sensors fail, and RAC Drive names extreme exhaust heat as the usual cause. German testers often blame the dosing pump.

Which cars: all diesels in the engine list.

Fix: replace the failed sensor or the dosing pump. Ask for the full stamped service history before you buy.

Cost: no confirmed price. Replacement is described as costly, with no figure.

Air suspension compressor and bellows

Symptoms: one corner sinks, often overnight. The compressor runs all the time, and cockpit warnings show. A faulty relay can stop the compressor from starting, so the car will not lower.

Cause: worn air bellows (the air springs), compressor and valve block. Dirt damages the bellows, and moisture or leaks harm the compressor.

Which cars: cars with Airmatic air suspension. Kfz-Dietrich reports that estate (S213) and All-Terrain rear air springs fail after 150,000-200,000 km and should always be replaced in pairs.

Typical km: 90,000-150,000 km (bellows and compressor).

Fix: replace the faulty part. A compressor job includes a teach-in step, which the garage counts in its price.

Cost: no confirmed price.

9G-Tronic jerks and late shifts

Symptoms: jerks at low load and when pulling away, late shifts when the car is cold, and some vibration.

Cause: a neglected gearbox oil or fluid service. Severe cases can damage the transmission.

Which cars: the 9G-Tronic automatic in almost all W213 cars.

Typical km: not stated. The fluid service interval is 80,000-100,000 km. Sources differ on the figure.

Fix: a reset of the gearbox adaptation with the Mercedes XENTRY tool, then an ATF flush (automatic transmission fluid, approval MB 236.17). The mechatronic (the gearbox's electronic control and valve unit) is replaced only if needed. A plain drain is not enough.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Infotainment freezes and reboots

Symptoms: frozen screens, reboots, a black screen, a touch display that jumps or does not respond, CarPlay that drops out, and voice control that does not answer.

Cause: failing controllers, overheating of the main unit, or a faulty control unit. Software updates fix some faults.

Which cars: COMAND NTG5.5 and, on facelift cars, MBUX.

Typical km: not stated.

Fix: a software update first. A defective screen or controller is replaced.

Cost: AUTO BILD gives a replacement infotainment screen from 1,463 EUR, including labour and 19 % VAT (Germany, year not stated).

Sources: AUTO BILD: W 213 used test, Auto Express: used Mk5 buying review, За рулем: W213 faults

Front axle play and ball joint wear

Symptoms: knocks and play from the front axle, and knocks over bumps. Wishbones and their bushes wear.

Cause: worn ball joints (the swivel joints of the suspension) and wishbone bushes. Some axle bodies corrode.

Which cars: all cars. German TÜV data show axle defects rising from the second inspection on.

Typical km: ball joints fail after 60,000-120,000 km (zr.ru).

Cost: no confirmed price.

Recalls

Recall counts differ by source: about 55 campaigns (Auto Express, UK, June 2026), nearly 80 KBA topics (AUTO BILD, June 2026) and about three dozen (AUTO BILD TÜV-Check, May 2026, E-Class page). The row below is the one campaign that two sites name. Only the German list gives years. Check open campaigns by VIN with a Mercedes dealer.

Country Code Years What is done (fault; remedy only where stated)
Not stated not given Built 2016 to 2021 (campaign 2022) Timing chain, OM654. Remedy not described.

Maintenance

  • Gearbox fluid: Change the 9G-Tronic oil and flush the ATF every 80,000-100,000 km. Sources give 80,000 km and about 100,000 km, so ask for the record.
  • Service records: Keep the full stamped service history. Auto Express tells buyers to insist on it, and the recall work is easier to prove with it.
