At a glance

  • Years: 2000-2006. The facelift arrived in 2003.
  • Reliability: 3/5. Timing chains and the Easytronic gearbox wear early, and brake lines rust on early cars.
  • DIY: 3/5. Most checks are simple; chain and Easytronic repairs need a workshop.
  • Prefer: a car with a full service history.
  • Avoid: Easytronic cars without clutch or actuator records, and 1.0 or 1.2 cars with a cold-start rattle.

Before you buy

  1. Timing chain: Listen for a metallic rattle from a cold start. A rattle is a bad result. Replacement 600-1,000 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).
  2. Easytronic: Drive it from cold. Slow shifts, jerking, a flashing F or no gear selection are bad results. Use a scanner; codes need a Tech2. Repair 300-700 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).
  3. Steering rack: With the engine running, turn the wheel while stationary. A knock or play is a bad result.
  4. Brake lines: Look at the steel lines above the fuel tank and along the floor. Heavy rust or damp patches are a bad result.
  5. Exhaust: Inspect the rear silencer and the pipe near the fuel filler neck. Rust holes are a bad result. Rear silencer about 225 EUR (Germany, 2003).
  6. Gear linkage: With the engine off, try first, second and reverse. A stiff or vague lever points to worn linkage. Repair 120-200 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).
  7. Oil pressure switch: Check the switch for oil mist or drips. Replacement 30-80 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).

In detail

Petrol timing chain

The 1.0 and 1.2 petrol engines use a timing chain that stretches as its tensioner wears. A stretched chain can jump and bend valves. Listen for a metallic rattle from a cold start. The 1.4 Twinport (Z14XEP) uses the same chain design. Za Rulem puts chain life at 90,000-120,000 km. Dirty or low oil starves the tensioner. Chain, tensioner and guides come as a kit. Gebrauchtwagenberater puts a garage quote at 600-1,000 EUR (year not stated).

Easytronic clutch and actuator

Easytronic is a manual gearbox with an electric clutch and actuator, not a real automatic. The actuator and clutch wear. Symptoms are slow shifts, jerking away from rest, a car that will not engage a gear and an engine that stalls at a standstill. A flashing F can also come from a weak battery, blown brake light bulbs or the crankshaft sensor; ADAC lists the crankshaft sensor as a recurring fault in 2000-2002. Kolesa.ru puts actuator failure after 60,000-70,000 km, from worn brushes and dirt. Gebrauchtwagenberater puts the actuator or control unit repair at 300-700 EUR (year not stated). Ask for clutch adaptation proof.

Steering rack knock

The steering rack can knock as its support bushes wear. Za Rulem hears the knock from 20,000-60,000 km. Kolesa.ru puts play and knocking at 100,000-150,000 km, with jamming possible later. Owners report rack replacement. No EUR or GBP price is confirmed.

Manual gear linkage

On five-speed manual cars built up to and including 2005, first, second and reverse can be hard to engage. The shift linkage wears. The 1.7 CDTI uses a cable and is not affected. Gebrauchtwagenberater puts new linkage or rods at 120-200 EUR (year not stated).

Brake line corrosion

The steel brake lines can rust, especially on early cars and near the fuel tank. ADAC lists rust-prone brake lines as a common TÜV failure. A rusty line can burst and lose braking. Check the lines above the fuel tank and along the floor.

Exhaust corrosion

The exhaust rusts, mainly on the 1.0 three-cylinder. Short city trips leave condensate in the silencer, which cannot evaporate. The rear silencer and the pipe near the fuel filler neck are the usual spots. A new rear silencer cost 225 EUR at a brand workshop (Germany, 2003). A full system was about 300 GBP for a 1.2 three-door (UK, 2006). One 1.2 owner says the exhaust burnt through at 80,000 km.

Oil pressure switch leak

The oil pressure switch can leak and cause fast oil loss on the 1.0 (Z10XEP), 1.2 (Z12XEP) and 1.4 (Z14XEP) Twinport engines from 2003. Check that the switch is dry. Gebrauchtwagenberater puts a new switch at 30-80 EUR (year not stated).

Water in the footwell

Water can collect in the driver's footwell when the cover over the body control module (the unit that runs the locks, lights and wipers) or the brake booster seal leaks. Lift the carpets before buying; damp carpets or a musty smell are bad signs.

Recalls

No recall with a code or two independent sources was found for the Corsa C. Check open campaigns by VIN with an Opel dealer before you buy.

Maintenance

  • Keep the engine oil clean and at the right level; low or dirty oil starves the timing chain tensioner.
  • Check the oil pressure switch for oil mist at every service.
  • Have the steel brake lines above the fuel tank checked on early cars.
  • The 1.8 (Z18XE) and the pre-facelift 1.4 (Z14XE) have a timing belt. ADAC lists the 1.8 belt change at 90,000 km or 72 months, about 430 EUR (Germany).
