At a glance

  • Years: built 2010 to 2017. Most gearbox and ignition reports are about pre-facelift cars.
  • Reliability: 2/5. The 1.4 Turbo has the most known faults, and oil loss is common across the range.
  • DIY: 2/5. Timing chain, gearbox and cooling repairs need a workshop.
  • Prefer: a car with a full service record, done recalls and a quiet gearbox.
  • Avoid: a 1.4 Turbo with no proof of timing chain or coolant work, and an M32 gearbox that hums.
  • Biggest risk: the 1.4 Turbo timing chain. A failed chain can destroy the engine.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.4 petrol (A14XER), 100-101 PS: no common engine fault known. The ignition coil is a known breakdown cause on petrol cars.
  • 1.4 Turbo, A14NET (140 PS) and A14NEL (120 PS): the timing chain, coolant loss and oil loss are named for the A14NET.
  • 1.3 CDTI (A13DTE), 75 PS at launch: no common fault known.
  • 1.7 CDTI (A17DT), 100 and 110 PS: no common fault known.
  • 1.6 CDTI, 95 to 136 PS (Euro 6 from 2014): a wiring harness recall applies to cars with the M32 manual.
  • Manual, M32 6-speed (diesels and turbo petrols): the bearings wear.
  • Manual, F13 5-speed (101 PS petrol): no common fault known.
  • Automatic, AF40 6-speed (100 PS diesel): no common fault known.

Before you buy

  1. Ask for proof of timing chain work on a 1.4 Turbo. Listen for chain noise, especially on a cold start. Bad result: no record and a noisy engine.
  2. Drive the M32 gearbox in every gear and listen for a hum. Bad result: a hum or whine.
  3. On a 1.4 Turbo, check the coolant level. Look for leaks at the water pump, thermostat housing and expansion tank. Bad result: low coolant or drips under the car.
  4. Check the oil level after the test drive and ask for an oil service record. Bad result: low oil and no record.
  5. On a 1.6 CDTI with the M32, ask for proof that the wiring harness was re-routed. Bad result: no record, since the fault can stop the engine starting.
  6. On a petrol car, check the valve cover and ask about crankcase ventilation work. Bad result: uneven idle, whistling, or an oil cap that is hard to remove.
  7. Check the track rods and coupling rods for play, and the springs and dampers on older cars. Bad result: play in the joints.
  8. Read the engine fault memory with a scanner. Bad result: misfire or ignition fault codes.
  9. Ask the dealer to check the VIN for open recalls: the rear seat belt buckles and the engine software recall. Bad result: any open recall.
