At a glance
- Years: 1998 to 2012, in three generations. Hatchback, SW estate and CC. The facelift came in 2003, the 206+ in 2009.
- Reliability: 2/5. The AL4 automatic, the CC roof, the diesel turbo and the electrics are the weak points.
- DIY: 2/5. Roof, gearbox and turbo jobs need a workshop. Belts and brakes are manageable at home.
- Prefer: a petrol five-speed manual with a timing belt record and, on the CC, a dry roof that cycles cleanly.
- Avoid: the AL4 automatic, a CC roof that stalls or leaks, and a car with no timing belt record.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 petrol (HFX, KFW, KFU, KFT, NFU, NFZ, RFN, RFK): coil packs fail and the timing belt needs a record.
- 1.4 and 1.6 HDi (8HZ, 9HZ) and 2.0 HDi (RHY): the turbo is the main risk. Short oil changes help.
- Five-speed manual: can whine, grind and jump out of gear with wear. See Manual gearbox whines, grinds or jumps out of gear.
- AL4 four-speed automatic (1.4 and 1.6 petrol): the weakest part of the car. See AL4 automatic gearbox fails.

| Front suspension bushes and drop links wear | Front axle, worst up to 2002 | From 20,000 km on early cars (AUTO BILD); 70,000-90,000 km (Auto.ru) | About 50 EUR per side for the anti-roll bar (auto motor und sport, year not stated) |
Before you buy
- Drive the automatic from cold through all gears, and ask for fluid change records. Bad result: a "Gearbox faulty" message, limp mode or a flashing D3. A scanner can read the AL4 codes.
- Ask for proof that the timing belt and water pump were changed. Bad result: no record, or a belt older than four years. No scanner needed.
- On the CC, open and close the roof several times, watch the boot lock and take the car through a car wash. Bad result: a slow cycle, a roof alarm, or water inside. A scanner can read roof codes.
- Check the turbo for shaft play with the inlet hose off, and listen for a whine. Bad result: shaft play, a whine under load, or no oil change record. A scanner can read boost codes.
- Listen for a whine at low speed and check that every gear engages. Bad result: a loud whine, a grind, or a gear that jumps out. No scanner needed.
- Test the windows, remote locking, radio and every warning lamp, and try both keys. Bad result: a lamp that stays on, a key that will not start the car, or a dead remote. A scanner can read the body computer.
- Push down on each corner and rock the front wheels for play. Bad result: clunks, play in a ball joint, or uneven front tyre wear. No scanner needed.
- Ask a dealer to check open campaigns by VIN. Bad result: an open campaign on the car. No scanner needed.

In detail
AL4 automatic gearbox fails
The AL4 four-speed automatic came with the 1.4 and 1.6 petrol. Stuck solenoid valves and worn friction plates cause the faults, and overheating makes them worse. Auto.ru says it can fail before 100,000 km. Za Rulem, writing about the AL4 in general, says the main solenoid wears out very fast when it overheats.
Symptoms: a "Gearbox faulty" warning, limp mode with a flashing D3, and harsh changes. A French Car Forum thread lists fault P1167, a pressure regulation fault.
Fix: check the fluid and look for a leak, then replace the pressure modulation valve and its seals. A dealer resets the oil counter with Diagbox. Auto.ru advises a fluid change every 60,000 km.
Cost: No confirmed price.

On the CC: roof mechanism and leaks
The CC roof is electro-hydraulic. Loose or dead microswitches and sensors stop the sequence, the most common roof fault in AUTO BILD's report. The hydraulic cylinder cannot be sealed, so an oil leak means a new roof console. The boot locking cable can tear. Water also gets past the seals, most often on the first build years.
Symptoms: the roof stops halfway, the boot will not lock, a roof alarm chimes, or water enters the cabin.
Fix: replace the microswitch, sensor or roof console. A bicycle Bowden cable can replace the locking cable. New seals and a roof adjustment stop the leaks.
Cost: AUTO BILD gives about 1,000 EUR for the roof console (2005). One owner on autoplenum reports 500 EUR for the locking cable (2013). No price for the seals.

Diesel turbo fails
The diesel turbo is a weak point on the 206. On the 1.6 HDi, sludge blocks a strainer in the turbo oil feed, and the turbo runs dry. A French Car Forum thread says a new turbo fitted without cleaning the feed lasted only a short time.
Symptoms: a whine or other unusual noise, and shaft play (movement in the turbo shaft) with the inlet hose off.
Fix: clean the oil feed strainer and use low-ash 5W30 oil with short change intervals. On most cars the radiator must come out.
Cost: No confirmed price.

Manual gearbox whines, grinds or jumps out of gear
The five-speed manual can whine at low speed and then grind as a bearing or gear wears. Hard shifting may come from the shift linkage. A light whine is normal; a loud grind or a gear that jumps out is not. The repair means stripping the gearbox, which is labour-intensive.
Symptoms: a whine that turns into a grind, a gear that jumps out, or hard selection.
Fix: a rebuilt or used gearbox; check the linkage first. Auto.ru puts unit life at 300,000-400,000 km with oil checks every 50,000-60,000 km; the clutch lasts about 100,000 km.
Cost: No confirmed price.

Electronics faults and immobilizer no-start
Early cars have the most electrical faults. The engine warning lamp often stays on, sometimes because an oversensitive sensor puts the car into limp mode. The immobilizer can refuse to start the car when the transponder chip works loose in the key; the ADAC found this. Corroded connectors and a poor earth cause dead lights, a dead heater fan and brake lights that stay on.
Symptoms: a warning lamp, a no-start, dead windows or locking, or failed lights.
Fix: clean and reconnect the earth points and connectors, and reset the body computer (BSI).
Cost: No confirmed price.

Front suspension bushes and drop links wear
The front axle is the car's biggest weakness, per a TÜV expert quoted in AUTO BILD. The lower control arm bushes wear, on early cars sometimes by 20,000 km, and the ball joints and anti-roll bar links follow. Auto.ru puts the front bushes and hub bearings at 70,000-90,000 km and the stabiliser links at 30,000 km.
Symptoms: clunks over bumps, vague steering, uneven front tyre wear, and play in a ball joint.
Fix: new bushes, ball joints or complete arms. The anti-roll bar link is cheap.
Cost: auto motor und sport puts the front anti-roll bar at about 50 EUR per side (year not stated).

Recalls
No recall is confirmed by two sources in the sources read.

Maintenance
- Timing belt: Auto.ru and CarsGuide give 60,000-80,000 km for the petrol engines. Follow the service book for the engine code, and change by age if the record is old. A snapped belt bends valves. Change the water pump at the same time.
- Cooling system: the petrol water pump can drip. Watch the coolant level, the thermostat and the radiator fan.
- Automatic gearbox: change the AL4 fluid and filter every 60,000 km (Auto.ru).
- Manual gearbox: Auto.ru says check the oil every 50,000-60,000 km. On the diesel, keep oil changes short to protect the turbo.
