At a glance
- Years: 2006 to 2015. The facelift came in 2009. Hatchback, SW estate, CC and RC/GTi.
- Reliability: 2/5. The timing chain, automatic gearbox and oil use are the known weak points.
- DIY: 2/5. Chain and gearbox jobs need a workshop.
- Biggest risks: the timing chain on the 1.6 VTi and THP, and the automatic gearbox valve block.
- Prefer: records of timing chain work, gearbox fluid changes and closed recalls. Avoid: a rattle on cold start or a "Gearbox faulty" message.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.4 16V 90 PS (KFU): timing belt, change every 100,000 km.
- 1.6 VTi 120 PS (5FW): check the timing chain first. Carbon and oil use are also named.
- 1.6 THP 150, 156 and 175 PS (5FX, 5F04, 5FR, 5FY): the same chain, carbon and oil faults.
- 1.6 HDi (DV6 engines): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- Five-speed manual: clutch and gearbox bearing wear.
- AL4 four-speed automatic (with the 1.6 VTi 120 PS only): valve block and solenoid valves fail. Regular fluid changes matter.

Before you buy
- Ask for proof that the timing chain and tensioner were replaced. Listen for a cold-start rattle. Bad result: a rattle, a warning light, or no record. A scanner can read the fault memory.
- Ask for the gearbox fluid change records. Drive in all gears with the engine warm. Bad result: a "Gearbox faulty" message, jerky changes, or no records. A scanner can read gearbox faults.
- Check the oil level cold and after a drive. Bad result: blue smoke at start-up, or oil use well above about 2 litres per 10,000 km. No scanner needed.
- Ask whether the intake valves were cleaned, which needs the head off. Bad result: power loss with no record. No scanner needed.
- Listen for clatter at low revs and check that all gears engage on a test drive. Bad result: clatter, grinding, or gears that will not engage. No scanner needed.
- Check open recall campaigns by VIN with a dealer. Bad result: an open campaign. No scanner needed.

In detail
Timing chain stretches and tensioner fails
The timing chain links the crankshaft to the camshafts. On the 1.6 VTi and THP it stretches, and the tensioner fails to hold it. Short trips and late oil changes make the wear worse.
Symptoms: a rattle or clatter on cold start and under load changes. A stretched chain shifts the valve timing. zr.ru also says that chain shock can damage the THP's high-pressure fuel pump.
zr.ru measured a stretch of 3-4 mm in 15,000-20,000 km, and names about 60,000 km as the usual first sign.
Fix: replace the chain and the tensioner. The sources name no revised parts.
Cost: No confirmed price.

Automatic gearbox valve block and solenoids fail
The AL4 is a four-speed automatic. Stuck solenoid valves and worn friction plates cause the faults. Neglect, overheating and heavy use make them worse.
Symptoms: a "Gearbox faulty" message and rough gear changes. auto.ru says the AL4 can fail before 100,000 km.
Fix: dealers mostly replaced the torque converter, the valve body or the valves. One owner on DRIVE2 reports that a hydraulic block flush and two new solenoid valves fixed most faults.
Fluid: change every 30,000 to 60,000 km. Dealers advise the shorter interval.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Oil use and oil leaks
The 1.6 VTi and THP can burn oil and leak it. A clogged crankcase breather (PCV valve) builds pressure. Oil then leaks past the valve cover gasket and the crankshaft seals.
Symptoms: blue smoke at start-up, and oil lost between top-ups. zr.ru gives about 2 litres per 10,000 km as normal use.
Fix: replace the whole valve cover.
Cost: No confirmed price.

Intake valves get carbon deposits
Carbon builds up on the intake valves. A stretched chain lets exhaust gas flow back into the intake, which adds to it. Gebrauchtwagenberater also names coked direct-injection injectors on the THP.
Symptoms: power loss and higher fuel use.
Fix: the cylinder head is removed and the valves are cleaned mechanically. Gebrauchtwagenberater advises regular cleaning additives.
Cost: No confirmed price.

Manual clutch wears out and gearbox bearing fails
On the five-speed manual, the clutch wears out. zr.ru puts clutch life at 120,000-150,000 km on the 1.4 16V (ET-3). Gebrauchtwagenberater reports that the gearbox bearing can fail early, with a clatter at low revs that grows louder and damage to the gearbox.
Symptoms: a clatter at low revs, and grinding noises. Owners on autoplenum report grinding until the gearbox failed, and two clutch replacements.
Fix: full gearbox replacement, or a reconditioned unit.
Cost: No confirmed price.

Maintenance
- Timing belt: on the 1.4 TU3, 1.4 16V ET3, 1.6 TU5 and HDi engines, change the belt every 100,000 km (Kolesa) or every 10 years (Auto Express).
- Chain engines: the VTi and THP use a timing chain. Late oil changes speed up chain wear (Gebrauchtwagenberater).
- Automatic gearbox: change the fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 km.
- Recalls: ask a dealer to run the VIN for open campaigns.
