At a glance

  • Years: built 2002 to 2009. The facelift came in 2006.
  • Most common: the 1.2 timing chain and the timing belts on the diesels and the 1.4 16V. A failed belt or chain can destroy the engine.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because the chain and belt jobs can end in engine damage, and windows, coils and rear brakes fail often.
  • DIY: 3/5, because coils, bulbs and window regulators are simple jobs, but chain and belt work needs a workshop.
  • Prefer: a car with a stamped service history and a recent timing belt or tensioner change, with working windows.
  • Avoid: a 1.2 with a rattle on a cold start and no chain or belt record.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.2 three-cylinder petrol (BBM, BME, BXV, 60 to 70 PS): a timing chain, not a belt. The chain can stretch. See 1.2 three-cylinder timing chain.
  • 1.4 16V petrol (BKY, BXW, BBZ, 75 to 100 PS): timing belt and tensioner, and frost damage on the older 75 PS. See timing belt and tensioner and frost damage.
  • 1.6 16V petrol (BTS, 2006-2008): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.8 turbo petrol (BJX 150 PS FR, BBU 180 PS Cupra): coil packs are the most reported fault. See ignition coils.
  • 1.4 TDI pump-injector diesel (AMF, BNM, BNV, 70 to 80 PS): timing belt on the diesel schedule, see timing belt on diesel engines. Engine guide: PD TDI engines.
  • 1.9 SDI pump-injector diesel (ASY, 64 PS, to 2005): the same diesel timing belt rule applies, see timing belt on diesel engines.
  • 1.9 TDI pump-injector diesel (BMT 100 PS, BLT 130 PS FR, BUK 160 PS Cupra): timing belt on the diesel schedule, see timing belt on diesel engines. Engine guide: PD TDI engines.
  • 5-speed manual: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual (1.9 TDI 130 and 160 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 4-speed automatic (1.4 16V 75 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy

  1. Timing chain (1.2). Ask for proof of the last chain check. Start the engine cold and listen. Bad result: a rattle on a cold start or under load, or no proof of a check.
  2. Timing belt (diesel). Ask for the date and mileage of the last belt and tensioner change. Bad result: no record, or a belt older than 40,000 miles (about 64,000 km) on a PD diesel.
  3. Timing belt (1.4 16V). Ask for the record of the belt and tensioner change. Bad result: no record of a change.
  4. Frost damage (1.4 petrol). Ask whether the car stood outdoors in hard frost. Check the oil level on a cold engine. Bad result: low oil, or a rough start after a hard frost.
  5. Ignition coils (petrol). Start the engine warm and listen for misfire. A scanner shows misfire fault codes (needs a scanner). Bad result: a misfire or a fault code.
  6. Windows and central locking. Use every window switch and the central locking, from the key and from inside. Bad result: a window sticks, drops or stops. No tools needed.
  7. Rear brakes. After the test drive, feel each rear wheel for heat. A lift shows the rear brakes (needs a lift). Bad result: a hot wheel, a drag, or brakes that seize.
  8. Recall VIN check. Ask a dealer to check the VIN for the fuel pump screw and airbag campaigns. Bad result: a campaign not done.
