At a glance

  • Years: built 1999 to 2007 as hatchback, Combi and saloon. The facelift came for the 2005 model year.
  • Most common: the 1.2 HTP timing chain can stretch and cause major engine damage. Diesel timing belts and turbos carry a similar risk.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because a stretched chain or a torn belt can end the engine.
  • DIY: 3/5, because window regulators and coils are home jobs. The chain, belt and turbo are workshop jobs.
  • Prefer: a 12-valve 1.2 HTP with chain service proof, and a 1.9 TDI PD with belt and turbo records.
  • Avoid: a 1.2 HTP 6V (AWY, BMD) without chain service proof.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.0 8V 50 PS (AQV, 1999-2000): the crankcase breather can fail in frost. See Crankcase breather freezes.
  • 1.4 8V MPI 60 and 68 PS (AZE, AZF, AME, AQW, ATZ): the breather can fail. The engine has a timing chain, not a belt. See Crankcase breather freezes.
  • 1.2 HTP 6V 55 PS (AWY, BMD): the timing chain can stretch. Avoid it without chain service proof. See Timing chain stretch, 1.2 HTP.
  • 1.2 HTP 12V 64 PS (AZQ, BME): the better 1.2 choice, according to gebrauchtwagenberater.de. The chain can still stretch, so check its record.
  • 1.4 16V 75 and 80 PS (AUA, BBY, BKY, BUD): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.4 16V about 100 PS (AUB, BBZ): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 8V 115 PS (AZL, BBX): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.9 SDI 64 PS (ASY): change the timing belt by 90,000 km at the latest. See Timing belt tear on diesels.
  • 1.4 TDI PD 75, 70 and 80 PS (AMF, BNM, BNV): belt risk is in Known issues. See the PD TDI guide.
  • 1.9 TDI PD 101 PS (ATD, AXR): turbo and belt risks are in Known issues. gebrauchtwagenberater.de and kfz-dietrich.com name dual-mass flywheel wear at high mileage. See the PD TDI guide.
  • 1.9 TDI PD 130 PS (ASZ, BLT, Fabia RS): turbo and belt risks are in Known issues. See the PD TDI guide.
  • 5-speed manual (002, 02T): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 4-speed automatic (001): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual (Fabia RS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy

  1. Timing chain (1.2 HTP). Ask for proof that the chain was checked or replaced. Bad result: no proof and no answer.
  2. Timing belt (diesel). Ask for the date and mileage of the last belt change. Bad result: no record, or more than 90,000 km since the change on a 1.9 SDI or 1.9 TDI.
  3. Turbo (1.9 TDI PD). Ask whether the turbo was replaced, and whether the pipes and intercooler were cleaned. Bad result: a whine or lost power on the test drive.
  4. Crankcase breather (1.0 and 1.4 8V). Ask whether a heated breather is fitted. Bad result: no heated breather on a car used in frost.
  5. Ignition coils (petrol). Start the engine warm and listen for misfire or stalling. Bad result: a misfire. A scanner shows the fault codes.
  6. Windows and central locking. Use every window switch and the central locking, from the key and from inside. Bad result: a window drops, sticks or stops, or the doors lock or unlock on their own.
  7. Suspension. Check the tie rods on a lift. Bad result: knocks or play.
  8. VIN check. Ask a Skoda dealer to check the VIN for the driver airbag and fuel pump campaigns and service action 97J7. Bad result: an open campaign.
