At a glance

  • Years and codes: built 2006 to 2015. A coupe-convertible with a folding steel roof. Petrol engines CAX, CTH, BLF, BVY, BWA, CCZ and BUB, CDV; diesel CFF.
  • Main risks: roof leaks and roof mechanism faults. The DSG gearbox clutch and mechatronic (gearbox control unit) come next.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because roof faults are common in the sources and DSG repairs cost a lot.
  • DIY: 1/5, because roof, gearbox and engine jobs need a specialist workshop.
  • Prefer: a car with dry seals, a dry boot and footwell, and proof of roof and DSG oil service.
  • Avoid: a car whose roof does not run fully, a car with water or mould in the roof, and a car with no service record.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.4 TSI, 122 PS (CAX) and 160 PS (CTH): timing chain stretch is the main known fault on this engine. See the EA111 guide.
  • 1.6 FSI, 115 PS (BLF): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 FSI, 150 PS (BVY): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 TFSI, 200 PS (BWA) and 2.0 TSI, 210 PS (CCZ): high oil use is a known issue. See oil use on TFSI and TSI petrol engines.
  • VR6, 250 PS (BUB) and 260 PS (CDV): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 TDI, 140 PS (CFF): early cars to 2008 have the pump-nozzle engine, and its elements can wear at high mileage. See the 2.0 TDI guide for the common-rail faults.
  • Six-speed manual (manual6): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • Six-speed wet DSG, DQ250 (dct6): clutch wear and mechatronic faults. See DQ250 DSG clutch and mechatronic.

Before you buy

  1. Roof seals and drains. Look at the roof seals for dried, cracked, broken or missing rubber. Look in the boot and footwell for water, and smell for mould. A bad result is water marks, damp carpet or a musty smell. Ask for roof and drain service records.
  2. DSG gearbox. Test drive the car from cold. Watch for judder when pulling away, harsh shifts from 1st to 2nd, and limp mode. A bad result is any judder or limp mode. Ask for oil change records. A scanner reads the gearbox fault codes.
  3. Roof run. Lower and raise the roof twice, watching the dashboard. A bad result is a warning message, a strained motor sound, a jerky movement or a roof that stops. A roof that stops or will not lock needs a dealer or a specialist.
  4. ABS and ESP unit. Check the ABS and ESP warning lights after start. A bad result is a lit light. Ask for proof that the software update was done. A scanner reads the ABS fault codes.
  5. Oil level and oil use. Check the dipstick on a warm engine. Ask for the oil use history. A bad result is top-ups between services or blue smoke on pull-away.
  6. Early diesel pump nozzle. On a 2.0 TDI built to 2008, ask for proof that the pump-nozzle elements were checked or replaced. A bad result is high mileage with no record.
  7. Windows. Test every window, including any automatic up and down function. A bad result is a window that stops, drops or does not close.
  8. Suspension and brakes. Look at the springs and dampers, and listen for knocks over bumps. Check the brake discs and pads. A bad result is a leaking damper, a knock or worn discs.
  9. Recall check. Ask a VW dealer to check the VIN for open campaigns. Ask whether the 2016 diesel software update (recall 23R7) was done. A bad result is no proof.

In detail

Roof leaks

Water comes in past the rubber roof seals. Dried, cracked, broken or missing seals are the warning sign (AutoTrader.ca). Squeaks often come from dried seals (AutoScout24). Water that gets in can cause mould in the roof structure, with a musty smell (Autoplenum).

Plugged body drain hoses can also cause leaks (Auto123).

A dealer may adjust the roof panels and hinges if the seals are intact but the car still leaks (AutoTrader.ca). Adjusting the panels and lubricating the seals can help prevent leaks (Auto123). Autoplenum says only certain VW-Kompetenz-Werkstätten should do roof work.

Cost: no confirmed price.

DQ250 DSG clutch and mechatronic

Symptoms: heavy clutch wear, depending on the driving style (carwiki, gebrauchtwagenberater). One owner had a warped clutch plate (AutoTrader.ca).

The mechatronic is the gearbox control unit. It runs the shift valves. On the Golf 5, with the same DQ250 gearbox, garage pages name the mechatronic as the usual failure. Symptoms there are judder when pulling away, harsh 1st to 2nd shifts, and limp mode (Kfz-Dietrich). The carwiki DSG page also says a mechatronic failure can leave the car undriveable.

Fix: on the Golf 5, a garage repairs single sensors or solenoids, or fits an overhauled unit (Kfz-Dietrich). The Eos has no fix in the sources read.

Oil: change the DSG oil every 50,000 to 60,000 km (gebrauchtwagenberater).

Cost: no confirmed price for the Eos.

Roof mechanism faults

Symptoms: warning messages and a strained motor sound when the roof runs (AutoTrader.ca). The roof moves jerkily, which is a warning sign (Autoplenum). Some owners reported problems with the complicated roof mechanism (Auto Express). A broken gear in the roof motor is named by gebrauchtwagenberater.

Cause: the sources name no single cause. Carwiki says the opening mechanism fails more often on high-mileage cars.

Fix: a roof that stops or will not lock needs a dealer or a specialist. Autoplenum says only certain VW-Kompetenz-Werkstätten should do roof work.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Sources: AutoTrader.ca, carwiki, gebrauchtwagenberater, Autoplenum, Auto Express

ABS and ESP control unit

Symptoms: the ABS control unit can fail from overheating (carwiki).

Recall: a recall for the ABS and ESP control unit covers 2008 to 2010 builds (gebrauchtwagenberater). Carwiki mentions a recall with a software update, without build years. See the recall table.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Sources: carwiki, gebrauchtwagenberater

Window regulators

Symptoms: some owners reported power window problems (AutoTrader.ca). Window regulators fail (gebrauchtwagenberater).

Cost: no confirmed price.

Sources: AutoTrader.ca, gebrauchtwagenberater

Oil use on TFSI and TSI petrol engines

Symptoms: high oil use. On the 2.0 TSI, oil use reached more than one litre per 1,000 km in some cars (gebrauchtwagenberater).

Cause: worn piston rings (gebrauchtwagenberater). Carwiki also names high oil use on the 2.0 TSI.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Sources: carwiki, gebrauchtwagenberater

Early TDI pump nozzle elements

Cause: pump-nozzle elements can wear at high mileage (gebrauchtwagenberater, carwiki). Autoplenum says the pump-nozzle 2.0 TDI was built until 2008, and common rail came after.

Fix: replacing the pump-nozzle elements may be needed (carwiki).

Cost: no confirmed price.

Sources: carwiki, gebrauchtwagenberater, Autoplenum

Suspension and brakes on older cars

Symptoms: the springs, dampers and drive shafts stand out negatively, and repairs are fairly expensive (carwiki). Worn brake discs are common on high-mileage cars (carwiki). A TÜV report from 2016, quoted by AutoScout24 and Autoplenum, found more defects in suspension and brake parts on slightly older cars.

Fix: check the whole brake system before you sign (carwiki).

Parts only, UK (RAC, Eos 1.4 TSI basis, year not stated): front brake pads about GBP 55, rear pads about GBP 45.
