Rust is the main risk. Check the sills, wheel arches and tailgate first, then the brake hoses and suspension rubber.

At a glance

  • Years: built 1983 to 1992. Facelift from 1987.
  • Biggest risks: rust in the body, porous brake hoses and worn suspension rubber, and oil leaks.
  • Reliability: 3/5, rust and ageing rubber are the common problems.
  • DIY: 3/5, basic maintenance is within reach, but the diesel injection pump needs special tools.
  • Prefer: solid sills, wheel arches and tailgate, and a record of timing belt and water pump work. Avoid: rust in the sills, wheel arches or tailgate.

Before you buy

  1. Sills and wheel arches: look under the car and inside the arches, behind the plastic liners. A bad result is bubbling paint or soft metal.
  2. Tailgate, windscreen frame and fuel filler neck: check each one for bubbles and rust. A bad result is rust that has broken through the metal.
  3. Battery tray, jacking points and front subframe: check them from underneath. A bad result is a soft spot or rust through the metal.
  4. Brake hoses and lines: check each hose for cracks, blisters and leaks, and the brake lines for rust. A bad result is any porous or leaking hose, or corroded lines.
  5. Suspension rubber and joints: check the bushes, boots, track rod ends and wheel bearings. A bad result is torn boots, worn bushes, or play in a wheel bearing.
  6. Oil leaks: look for oil on the engine and the gearbox. A bad result is any leak.
  7. Fuel injection (K-Jetronic, a mechanical fuel injection system): on a petrol car, start the engine cold and then warm, and listen to the idle. A bad result is a rough or erratic idle.
  8. Manual gearbox: shift through every gear, second included, and try reverse. A bad result is a gear that is hard to select, or a loose gear lever.
  9. G60 supercharger: ask when the supercharger was last overhauled, with a receipt. A bad result is no proof of any overhaul.

In detail

Rust

Rust is the main body problem. The usual spots are the sills, the wheel arches, the door bottoms, the tailgate, the fuel filler neck, the windscreen frame, the battery tray, the jacking points and the front subframe. Rust often hides behind plastic trims and wheel arch liners, so look behind them.

Brake hoses and lines

Brake hoses are usually porous or blistered. Check each one for cracks and leaks. Brake lines can corrode and leak. Replacing a whole line is costly.

Sources: AUTO BILD, AutoScout24, CarWiki, Motor-Talk

Suspension rubber and joints

Rubber parts age and wear. Rear axle bushes perish, and the control arm (wishbone) bushes wear. Drive shaft boots tear, which lets dirt into the joints. Track rod ends must be replaced when worn. Wheel bearings wear and click in corners, and shock absorbers wear out.

Oil leaks

Oil leaks from the engine and the gearbox are common, and sealing them is costly. Replacing shaft seals is relatively expensive.

Head gasket

Any engine can blow its head gasket after high mileage. On a diesel, the injection pump must be readjusted, and that needs special tools.

Fuel injection running problems

K-Jetronic is a mechanical fuel injection system, fitted to some petrol cars. Petrol cars with it can have running problems, so test the engine cold and warm before you buy.

Manual gearbox wear

The second-gear synchro can wear. A synchro is the ring that lets a gear engage smoothly. Plastic bushes in the shift linkage can break, and a worn linkage gives play and notchy shifting.

G60 supercharger

The G60 has a supercharger, the G-Lader. It can be fragile, and its durability is limited.

Maintenance

  • Change the timing belt every 90,000 to 120,000 km. Check or replace the water pump at the same time.
  • Check the brake hoses for porous spots, and the brake lines for rust, at each service.
  • Replace worn bushes, boots and track rod ends. Rubber parts age and wear.
  • Fix oil leaks when they start. Shaft seal work is relatively expensive.
