At a glance

  • Years: built 2010 to 2022. The facelift came in 2015.
  • Main faults: airbag gas generator recalls, sliding door motors, suspension wear and fast brake wear from the car's weight.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because TÜV finds about twice the average share of major faults at four to five years old and above-average shares at every age, and sliding door repairs are costly.
  • DIY: 2/5, because suspension and sliding door repairs need a workshop. The buyer checks need no tools unless marked.
  • Prefer: a car with airbag recall work on record and a full service book.
  • Avoid: a car with no proof of airbag recall work, or sliding doors that fail the switch test.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.4 TSI EA111 (CAV, CTH): the 2010 to 2015 twincharger petrol. Timing chain stretch on early TSI petrols is also reported by two sites. See the 1.4 TSI EA111 guide.
  • 1.4 TSI EA211 (CZD, CZE): the 2015 on petrol. The sources name no Sharan-specific fault for this engine. See the 1.4 TSI EA211 guide.
  • 2.0 TSI EA888 (CCZ, DED): 200 PS from 2010 to 2015 and 220 PS from 2015. The sources do not name this engine separately. See the 2.0 TSI EA888 guide.
  • 2.0 TDI EA189 (CFF, CFG): the 2010 to 2015 diesels at 115 to 170 PS. Euro 5 units need the emissions software update (see Recalls). EGR valve coking is named for the 2.0 TDI. See the 2.0 TDI EA189 guide.
  • 2.0 TDI EA288 (DFM): the 2015 on diesels at 115 to 184 PS. See the 2.0 TDI EA288 guide.
  • Automatic DSG (6-speed DQ250, 7-speed): no Sharan-specific DSG fault is named by two sources, so no gearbox guide is linked.

Before you buy

  1. Sliding doors. Open and close each sliding door by its switch and by hand. Test the B-pillar buttons and the central locking. A door that will not open, or a door control unit fault, can mean a motor, control unit or cable job, which is costly. Needs a scanner to read the door control unit fault codes.
  2. Suspension. Push down each corner and let go. The car should settle after one bounce. On a test drive, listen for knocks over bumps and noise when turning on the spot. These point to worn wishbone bearings, tie rods or dampers. No tools needed.
  3. Rust. Check the tailgate edges, the door seams and the lower edges of the doors for bubbling paint and rust. No tools needed.
  4. Airbag recalls. Ask a VW dealer to check the VIN for airbag campaigns. A car with open airbag work may not deploy its airbag in a crash. No tools needed.
  5. Brakes. Look through the wheels at the discs and pads. Heavy use wears them fast. Ask for the brake history. No tools needed.
  6. Headlights. Check the low beam aim, cloudy lenses and both indicators. A fault may need height adjustment or new headlights. No tools needed.
  7. Electrics and infotainment. Test the sat nav, Bluetooth pairing and the automatic lights in daylight. Light faults may need dealer recalibration with diagnostic equipment. Needs a scanner for the light recalibration.
