At a glance

  • Years: 2015 to 2022. The facelift came in 2019. The xDrive25e plug-in hybrid arrived in 2020.
  • Reliability: 3/5. Gearboxes, the xDrive coupling and the timing chain carry most of the risk.
  • DIY: 2/5. Chain, gearbox and xDrive work need a BMW-capable scanner and a workshop.
  • Prefer: a B48 20i or 25i with a full service record and proof of gearbox fluid service.
  • Avoid: a B37 diesel with no EGR or injector history, and a 7-speed dual-clutch car that jerks when pulling away.

Engines and gearboxes

Before you buy

  1. Test-drive the 8-speed Aisin in stop-and-go. Bad result: jerks, a delayed 1-2 shift, or no fluid service record. A scanner shows the adaptations and fault codes.
  2. Listen for a metallic rattle after a cold start. A BMW-capable scanner reads codes P0008, P0016, P0017 and P0341. Bad result: a rattle, those codes, or no chain history after 100,000 km.
  3. Drive slowly from a stop. Bad result: a rough take-up, a delay before the car moves, or a warning. A scanner reads the clutch adaptation.
  4. Ask for the rear coupling oil and filter record. Bad result: no record, or no service in the last 60,000-80,000 km. A scanner reads the all-wheel control unit for faults.
  5. Ask for EGR, injector and turbo history. A scanner reads the EGR values. Bad result: a clogged EGR, a DPF warning, power loss or limp mode, or no work record.
  6. Check for rough idle and misfire on a cold and a warm start. Ask for fuel and oil history. Bad result: rough idle, misfire, or power loss.
  7. Ask a BMW dealer to check open recall campaigns for the car's VIN. Bad result: an open campaign on the EGR cooler or the rear lights.

In detail

Timing chain (B38, B48 and B47)

Symptom: a metallic rattle in the first seconds after a cold start. A scanner can show P0008, P0016, P0017 and P0341. The chain stretches with running hours and the tensioner loses pressure. Limp mode can follow. KFZ Dietrich checks the chain from 100,000 km on the B38 and B48. Gebrauchtwagenberater calls the problem rare on cars with full service history, and more likely after missed services and many short trips. The garage page covers the 2 Series on the same engines.

Fix: chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets as one set.

Cost: 1,450-1,890 EUR (B38), 1,690-2,190 EUR (B48), 1,890-2,490 EUR (B47); diagnosis 89-149 EUR. KFZ Dietrich, net, 2026.

Aisin 8-speed automatic

Symptom: jerky shifts in stop-and-go, delayed 1-2 shifts and a sawing feel when pulling away. KFZ Dietrich reads P0729, P0731 and P0741. Press reports say these cases are rare. The full guide is the Aisin EAT8 guide.

Cause: old fluid. A normal drain leaves about 60 percent of the old oil in the unit.

Fix: flush with 12-14 L of ATF, new filter, clean magnets, reset the adaptations. The garage advises a service every 60,000 km.

Cost: 580-790 EUR for the flush. After a failed flush, a mechatronics unit costs 1,900-2,600 EUR. KFZ Dietrich, net, 2026.

7-speed dual-clutch (DCT)

Symptom: delayed engagement when pulling away, and rough take-up. Gebrauchtwagenberater says it appears in some cars and dislikes dense city traffic and heavy towing. auto.ru puts shifting problems at 100,000-120,000 km.

Fix: a worn clutch needs replacement. No price is confirmed.

xDrive rear coupling

Symptom: drive is split one-sided, and the rear axle engages late. The all-wheel control unit stores fault entries.

Cause: the clutch oil thickens after 60,000-80,000 km and the filter clogs. BMW lists the clutch as lifetime. WheelStreet says the same: oil and filter not changed on schedule.

Fix: clutch oil and filter. The garage recommends a service every 40,000 km.

Cost: 240-320 EUR for oil and filter. KFZ Dietrich, 2026.

B37 diesel EGR, injectors and VTG

Symptom: power loss and limp mode. Injectors can drift out of tolerance.

Cause: a coked EGR valve and a leaking EGR cooler. The DPF loads after failed regenerations on short trips. A VTG actuator can stick.

Which cars: the 1.5 diesel B37 (sDrive16d). It is not in the ADAC list.

Fix: clean or replace the EGR valve and cooler, DPF, VTG actuator and injectors. No price is confirmed.

Typical km: auto.ru puts EGR clogging at 30,000-40,000 km and injector failure at 60,000-100,000 km. KFZ Dietrich checks EGR, DPF and injectors from 80,000 km.

B38 petrol carbon build-up

Symptom: rough idle, misfire, power loss and higher fuel use. Sources name the petrol direct-injection engine.

Cause: carbon on the intake valves and in the injectors. Poor fuel and the wrong oil make it worse, according to auto.ru.

Which cars: the 1.5 petrol B38 (sDrive18i, xDrive25e).
