At a glance

  • Years: 2018 to 2026, facelift late 2020. The Cupra Ateca is the sporty version of the Seat Ateca (from 2016) and shares its body.
  • Reliability: 3/5. German inspection results are above the class average, but leaks, rust and brakes are the risks.
  • DIY: 2/5. Body leaks, tailgate wiring and infotainment need a workshop and often a scanner.
  • Biggest risk: water in the cabin and boot, and rust around the rear lights and door seals.
  • Prefer: a dry, rust-free car with recall proof. Avoid: damp carpets, paint lifting at the rear lights and open campaigns.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.5 TSI 150 PS (DXD): front-wheel drive, seven-speed DSG, facelift cars from 2023. See the 1.5 TSI evo guide.
  • 2.0 TSI 190 PS (DNN) and 300 PS (DNU, DNF): 4Drive and seven-speed DSG. See the 2.0 TSI guide.
  • Seven-speed dry DSG (DQ200): 1.5 TSI with front-wheel drive. See the DQ200 guide.
  • Seven-speed wet DSG (DQ381): 2.0 TSI. See the DQ381 guide.

Before you buy

  1. Press the carpets, boot floor and spare-wheel well, and look at the headlining near the mirror. Bad result: damp, stains or a musty smell.
  2. Look under the rear light clusters, along the rear door seals and the sills. Bad result: paint lifting, an orange tinge or bubbles.
  3. Open and close the powered tailgate several times and listen to the struts. Bad result: a slow or dead tailgate. A scan of module 6D shows stored codes.
  4. Read the last inspection report and look at the brake discs. Bad result: a deep lip, a poor contact pattern or brakes flagged.
  5. Switch on the ignition and check that all four front parking sensors report. A scanner shows park-pilot faults; inspect the loom at the bumper bend.
  6. Test the radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for a few minutes. Bad result: restarts, a blank screen or dropped phones.
  7. Ask a dealer for all open campaigns by VIN, including steering campaign 48T7. Bad result: an open campaign.

In detail

Water leaks into the cabin and boot

Water gets into the footwells through worn door seals and into the boot through the tailgate seal. Sunroof cars can leak into the roof lining. One 2019 car had a damp passenger footwell because the factory seam sealant behind the right front wheel was too thin. Reseal the doors, tailgate or body seam. No confirmed price.

Brake discs and pads

Brake discs are the only part German inspectors criticise. Older cars show a poor front disc contact pattern more often than the class average, and early cars wore front discs quickly. Cupra cars with 370 mm drilled discs can squeal and clog their holes with dust; front pads can be three-quarters worn by about 19,000 miles (about 30,600 km). Front discs cost 50-140 GBP and pads 46-57 GBP; rear discs 43-78 GBP and pads 25-54 GBP (UK, 2020). Replace discs with the pads.

Rust around the rear lights and door seals

Rust appears around the rear door seals, under the rear light clusters and on the rear door sills. Paint can lift with an orange tinge. SEAT repaired one 2017 car under warranty. Corroded alloy wheels and tailgate rust have also been reported. No confirmed price; check the seams behind the rear lights.

Electric tailgate failure

The powered tailgate can slow down or stop working. The usual cause is a damaged wire in one of the struts; a scan of module 6D stores code 0027 or B120A15 (hall sensors in motor 2). The struts have been revised. Repair the wire or fit a new strut. No confirmed price.

Infotainment freezes and restarts

MIB3 can restart, switch the radio off, blank the navigation screen and drop Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. A dealer update takes about three hours; versions cited in 2023 were 23.1 and 23.2. On connected cars, update OUH3 fixes login and navigation faults.

Front parking sensors fail

A front sensor fault shows as a park-pilot error with the four front sensors unavailable. The loom breaks at a factory bend and moisture gets in. The replacement loom is 575971095R. A scanner shows the stored faults. No confirmed price.
