At a glance
- What it is: VW's 7-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox, codes 0AM and 0CW, for engines up to 250 Nm.
- Main faults: a cracked accumulator housing in the gearbox control unit (mechatronic), and corroded electronics on 2008 to 2013 cars.
- Reliability: 2/5, because the mechatronic and the clutch both fail often and many countries ran recalls.
- DIY: 2/5, because most jobs need a scanner, special tools and basic settings.
- Buy: a car with recall work and the 2013 oil change on record, and no stored fault codes.
- Avoid: fault codes P17BF or P189C, oil on the gearbox, or a pump that never stops.
Known issues
| Issue | Affects | Typical km | Repair cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cracked accumulator housing | 2008 to 2016 cars | Any, from 30,000 km | 1,500 to 2,000 EUR (Germany); 1,800 to 2,800 GBP (UK) |
| Electronics corrosion (2008 to 2013 cars) | Cars built 2008 to 2013 with the original gear oil | Any | 1,500 to 2,000 EUR (Germany); recall in some countries |
| Clutch wear and judder | All | 80,000 to 180,000 km | 40,000 to 55,000 RUB fitted (Russia) |
| Control unit failures | All | 50,000 to 150,000 km | about 440 EUR repair (Germany) |
| Dual-mass flywheel rattle | Cars with a dual-mass flywheel | around 150,000 km | Replaced with the clutch |
| 6th and reverse shift fork | All | – | 40,000 to 45,000 RUB labour (Russia) |
| Oil leaks | Mechatronic and gearbox joints | – | 1,500 to 2,000 EUR when the mechatronic is involved (Germany) |
| Input shaft damage | Clutch changes that kept the old pilot bearing | – | Part of the clutch job |
Before you buy
- Fault scan (needs a scanner). P17BF, P189C, P1895 or P0841 mean a pressure fault, usually the accumulator housing. Get a repair price or walk away.
- Pump test. Ignition on, engine off. The pump should run briefly and stop. A pump that keeps whirring points to the accumulator.
- Oil. Look at the gearbox and the undertray. Wet oil can mean a mechatronic job.
- Control unit signs. Ask about a flashing gear display, a blown gearbox fuse, or the car losing drive at a stop.
- Clutch values (needs a scanner). Read remaining clutch travel and the adaptation counters. Counters that will not adapt, or very low travel, mean a clutch job soon.
- Road test in 6th and 7th. Full throttle from 1,000 and 1,500 rpm. Engine speed that swings by up to 200 rpm means a worn clutch. Also feel for judder pulling away.
- Reverse, cold and warm. A flashing R, no reverse or a crunch is bad.
- Cold start. A rattle for 5 to 10 minutes, or in 2nd on overrun, points to the flywheel.
- Paperwork. VIN check for open recalls; for 2008 to 2013 cars, proof of the 2013 oil change; invoices for any mechatronic repair.

In detail
Cracked accumulator housing
Symptoms. The pump runs more often, then non-stop. The car drives for a while, then goes into emergency mode. A warning light and oil on the gearbox can follow. A bad crack can blow the accumulator out of its housing, and the car stops at once. Fault codes P17BF, P189C, P1895 and P0841 point to this fault.
Cause. VW's recall notices name faulty machining of the accumulator housing thread. The wall around the thread can be too thin. The crack forms where the accumulator screws in.
Which cars. Recalls in different countries cover cars built from 2008 to 2016. Some cracks also appear on cars outside the recall.
Fix. A repair kit replaces the housing: VW part 0AM398025 or 0AM398025A. The kit holds the housing, check balls, gaskets, filter, accumulator, boots, sleeves and caps. If a pressure-loss code is stored in Japan, the mechatronic is replaced.
Cost. Germany: mechatronic job 1,500 to 2,000 EUR (2013 to 2025). UK: genuine mechatronic fitted 1,800 to 2,800 GBP (2017 to 2023). Russia: mechatronic repair 33,000 to 50,000 RUB (2017 and current).
Recalls. US 19V-866, Australia 2019 (several waves), Japan 2019 and 2020, Russia December 2016 and March 2017. See the recalls table.

Electronics corrosion (2008 to 2013 cars)
Symptoms. The fuse blows and the pump and mechatronic shut down. The gear indicator flashes and drive is lost. The fault mostly shows when the engine starts with the car stationary. In Japan, the clutches open while driving and the car coasts, while braking and steering stay working.
Cause. Corrosion of the control unit electronics, linked to the original synthetic gear oil. The 2013 recalls name lead frame corrosion.
Which cars. Cars built with the original synthetic gear oil. In Germany that is production from 2008 to May 2011 and from October 2012 to April 2013. In the US, the 2013 to 2014 Jetta Hybrid built October 2012 to October 2013.
Fix. A new mechatronic or control unit, then mineral gear oil plus software. In Germany the 2013 gear oil change was a voluntary service action. The China 2013 remedy was a free replacement of the mechatronic with an improved part and the latest software.
Cost. Germany: mechatronic job 1,500 to 2,000 EUR (2013 to 2025) where no recall covers the car.
Recalls. US 13V-568 (34F6), China March and November 2013, Japan 2013 and 2014, Australia 35C1 (2013), Germany 2013 oil action. See the recalls table.

Clutch wear and judder
Symptoms. Judder when pulling away, mainly in 2nd gear at low speed. Vibration on acceleration and knocks on take-off. Judder is the usual first symptom.
Cause. Clutch friction linings wear.
Which cars. Both clutch generations. The first generation (0AM, to May 2011) and the second generation (from June 2011) use different LuK kits. LuK RepSet 2CT numbers: 602 0001 00 and 602 0002 00 for the first generation; 602 0006 00 and 602 0007 00 for the second generation. Kit 602 0008 00 is for a Ford DPS6 gearbox, not the DQ200.
Fix. A new LuK clutch kit. VW gives no clutch life figure. Owners and garages report clutch life from about 80,000 to 180,000 km. Use is the main variable.
Cost. Russia: LuK kit 20,000 to 33,000 RUB (2017 to 2023). Turnkey clutch job 40,000 to 55,000 RUB (2017 to 2020).

Control unit failures
Symptoms. The gear indicator or "P" flashes, the car loses drive, or a control unit fuse blows. Fault codes P1604 (control unit faulty) and P0562 (voltage too low) appear. P177F means the control unit should be changed.
Cause. Broken aluminium bond wires inside the control unit. Overheating melts the contacts and burns the board. A repair shop that fixed 500 to 600 units saw them fail at 50,000 to 150,000 km.
Which cars. 0AM and 0CW. Boards are marked by part number: 0AM927769D, E, F, G and K. The fuse is model specific, so check the fuse table for your model. A 2013 Japanese recall for control unit faults covered 91,015 cars, with the control computer replaced.
Fix. A correctly marked board with programming, or a new unit. A replacement unit is tied to the car (immobilizer and VIN), so a used unit must be cloned or programmed.
Cost. Germany: control unit repair about 440 EUR (garage price).

Dual-mass flywheel rattle
Symptoms. A rattle on cold start for 5 to 10 minutes, and in 2nd gear on overrun.
Cause. The dual-mass flywheel has a limited life. Its clamp ring can rattle as it wears.
Which cars. Cars with a DMF. Replace the DMF when the clamp ring rattles, and replace the clutch at the same time. LuK DMF part numbers in the supplier list start at 415 0497 09 and run up to 415 0531.
Fix. A new DMF with the clutch.
Cost. No reliable price found. It is usually replaced together with the clutch.

6th and reverse shift fork
Symptoms. Reverse is lost. R flashes and the car will not reverse, or reverse goes in with a crunch. Odd and even gears can drop in and out.
Cause. The plastic retainers or tips of the 6th and reverse fork become brittle and break. The linear bearing wears. Debris from a broken bushing travels through the box and damages gears. Swarf on the fork magnets and position sensors causes limp mode and lost gears.
Which cars. 0AM and 0CW. Old fork 0AM311562C, new fork 0AM311562K. Use the part number on the car to see which fork it has.
Fix. Replace the fork with 0AM311562K. Check the fork magnets and the input shaft for debris while the box is open.
Cost. Russia: fork bearing labour 40,000 to 45,000 RUB (about 2019).

Oil leaks
Symptoms. Oil on the gearbox, the undertray or at the mechatronic breather. Pressure loss and warning lights can follow.
Cause. A cracked accumulator housing leaks oil outside. In Australia, the recall notice names a fluid leak in these gearboxes that can lead to pressure loss.
Which cars. 2011 to 2015 Golf, Jetta, Passat, Polo and Caddy in Australia (recall 34J5). Other cars with the same mechatronic can leak too.
Fix. Fix: the mechatronic or housing repair described under the accumulator section.
Cost. Germany: mechatronic job 1,500 to 2,000 EUR (2013 to 2025). UK: 1,800 to 2,800 GBP fitted (2017 to 2023).

Input shaft damage
Symptoms. Damage to the input shaft. Shaft damage can come with lost gears and noise.
Cause. The crankshaft pilot needle bearing wears if it is not replaced. Worn, it damages the input shaft.
Which cars. Any car where the pilot bearing was not changed at a clutch job.
Fix. Replace the pilot bearing at every clutch change. It is a consumable. Input shaft seals: outer 0AM301189E, inner 0AM301733L. Shaft repair uses a heated repair sleeve, IR12x15x22.5. Special tools: Kukko T10420 to extract the inner seal and Kukko T10421 to press it in.
Cost. Included in the clutch job (see the clutch section).

Maintenance
- Gear oil. VW gives a lifetime fill and no level check. German and Russian garages suggest a change every 100,000 to 120,000 km or 5 years. The factory fill is G 052 171, about 1.7 litres.
- 2013 oil action. Mineral oil G 052 512 A2 replaced synthetic oil in the affected cars. A car without this record may still have synthetic oil.
- Mechatronic oil. Central hydraulic oil G 004 000 M2. The unit holds about 1.0 to 1.1 litres.
- Clutch. Replace the pilot bearing at every clutch change. Replace the input shaft seals if oil shows.
- Warnings. Do not drive on with P17BF or P189C. A pump that will not stop, or a flashing gear indicator, needs a scan before more driving.
