At a glance
- Years: built 2005 to 2010, saloon and Variant. Common-rail diesels from 2008. TSI petrol engines from 2007.
- Reliability: 3/5. Several known faults, each tied to one engine or gearbox. No fault hits every car.
- DIY: 2/5. Oil pump, flywheel and gearbox jobs need a workshop.
- Prefer: cars with a full service history and proof the oil pump drive was checked. Avoid: pump-nozzle 2.0 TDI cars built 2005 to 2009 with no oil pump check, and any car with an oil warning lamp.
- Biggest risk: the 2.0 TDI oil pump drive, which can wreck the engine without warning.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.6, 102 hp: no common fault confirmed. The simplest engine in the range.
- 1.4 TSI: see the 1.2/1.4 TSI guide.
- 1.8 TSI and TFSI (152 and 160 hp), 2.0 TFSI (200 hp), from 2007: oil use and timing chains. See 1.8 and 2.0 TSI oil use and timing chain.
- 2.0 FSI, 150 hp: carbon on the intake valves. See 2.0 FSI valve carbon.
- 2.0 TDI pump-nozzle, 103 kW/140 PS: the oil pump drive can fail. See 2.0 TDI oil pump drive.
- 2.0 TDI common rail (EA189): see the 2.0 TDI guide.
- R36 3.6 V6 (2008 on): no engine fault confirmed here. Its gearbox is covered under 6-speed DSG.
Gearboxes are listed separately:
- 6-speed DSG (02E, also DQ250, wet clutch): mechatronic faults. See 6-speed DSG mechatronic.
- 7-speed DSG (DQ200, dry clutch, 1.4 and 1.8 TSI from 2008): clutch wear and mechatronic faults, mostly in early cars. Details are in the DQ200 guide.
- 6-speed manual with 2.0 TDI: a dual-mass flywheel can fail. See dual-mass flywheel and clutch.
- 09G 6-speed automatic: no common fault confirmed on this page.

Before you buy
- Ask for proof that the 2.0 TDI oil pump drive was checked or replaced. A lit oil warning lamp means stop: driving on can damage the engine.
- On a 2.0 TDI manual, ask whether the dual-mass flywheel was checked or replaced with the clutch. A clutch job quoted 918.83 to 1,223.92 EUR in Germany.
- On a 6-speed DSG, have the gearbox control unit read with a scanner. Ask for mechatronic records. A replacement costs 40,000-60,000 RUB in Russia.
- On a 1.8 or 2.0 TSI or TFSI, check the oil level after the test drive and ask for an oil service record. Oil use above about 1 litre per 1,000 km is a warning sign.
- On a 1.8 TSI, ask for timing chain work near 80,000-90,000 km. A replacement costs 25,000-35,000 RUB in Russia.
- On a 2.0 FSI, ask whether the intake valves were cleaned. Cleaning costs about 25,000 RUB in Russia.
- Test the electric parking brake. A warning message or a brake that will not release means a fault. Ask for fault codes to be read.
- Check the sills, wheel arches, lower door edges, bonnet and tailgate for rust. Look at the subframe mounts too.
- Check the springs and shock absorbers. Broken springs can make the car fail its TÜV inspection.

In detail
2.0 TDI oil pump drive
On pump-nozzle 2.0 TDI cars built 2005 to 2009, the hexagonal shaft that drives the oil pump can wear. When it wears, the oil pump can stop suddenly, often at high revs, and the engine can be seriously damaged. VW gives tolerance deviations as the cause. It does not recommend a preventive repair and decides goodwill cases one by one.
The full balance-shaft and oil pump module costs 1,300 to 1,700 EUR in Germany (2013). An independent workshop replaces only the hex pin and receptacle, with improved parts, from 650 EUR, with two years' warranty.

Dual-mass flywheel and clutch
The dual-mass flywheel is a two-part flywheel that smooths engine vibration. On the 2.0 TDI it is named as a weak point, and early diesels had problems with it. The clutch can wear fast in cars that are driven hard.
A clutch job on an example 2009 2.0 TDI was quoted between 918.83 and 1,223.92 EUR in Germany. The year of those quotes is not stated. Labour is about 5.2 hours for the clutch and 5.4 hours for the flywheel. A single-mass flywheel conversion is possible.

6-speed DSG mechatronic
The mechatronic is the gearbox control unit and hydraulic block in one unit. On the 6-speed DSG (02E, also DQ250), it can fail early or last hundreds of thousands of km. Signs include metal shavings on the sensors, worn solenoids and worn fork tips. Failed units are usually replaced whole. A mechatronic repair costs 40,000 to 60,000 RUB in Russia (2024).

1.8 and 2.0 TSI oil use and timing chain
The 1.8 and 2.0 TSI and TFSI engines burn oil. Sources describe oil use above about 1 litre per 1,000 km as a problem. Overhaul costs 90,000 to 120,000 RUB on a 1.8 TSI, and rises if the car is driven a long way on high oil use (Russia, 2024).
The timing chain stretches. On a 1.8 TSI it wears at 80,000 to 90,000 km. Replacement costs 25,000 to 35,000 RUB in Russia (2024). For the 1.4 TSI, see the 1.2/1.4 TSI guide.

2.0 FSI valve carbon
Direct-injection engines build carbon deposits on the intake valves at high mileage. On the 2.0 FSI the valves are usually affected after about 150,000 km. Cleaning costs about 25,000 RUB in Russia (2024). Cleaning additives are one suggested fix.

Electric parking brake
The electric parking brake can show a warning message or stop working. Ross-Tech lists fault code 02429 for the right parking brake motor (V283). Causes are fuses, wiring or connectors, or the motor itself. A garage repair starts with the fault memory, then the switch; if the switch is fine, the actuator motors are replaced in pairs by a certified workshop. The electric brake also makes a DIY rear pad change harder.

Body rust
Rust shows on the sills, the wheel arches, the lower door edges and the top of the windscreen. Check the subframe mounts too. Bonnet, tailgate, doors and wheel arches are also named.

Springs and shock absorbers
Shock absorbers wear at about 100,000 km, and rear springs can break after about 100,000 km. The suspension is a weak point at TÜV inspection, and springs and dampers are often due at the second inspection. Broken springs can cause a TÜV refusal.

Maintenance
- Engine oil: check the level at every fill-up on 1.8 and 2.0 TSI and TFSI engines. Oil use is the usual warning sign.
- Oil warning lamp: stop driving if the lamp lights. Driving on can damage the engine.
- Service history: keep full records of oil changes, clutch and gearbox work. Buy only with a complete service history.
