Before you buy
- On a DSG car, read the fault memory with a scanner and drive from cold. Bad result: jerks when pulling away or shifting, or a fault code. Needs a scanner.
- Check the VIN for open recall campaigns, especially the steering bolt (KBA 17091R) and the 2023 airbag campaign (012656). Bad result: any open campaign.
- On a 4x4, ask for the Haldex oil change record. Bad result: no record, or front wheels that spin when pulling away.
- Check the front and rear brake discs and pads, wheels off or with a torch. Bad result: worn discs or pads, so a brake job is due soon.
- Open and close the tailgate with the key, the button and the switch, several times. Bad result: it stops halfway, opens on its own or does not close.
- Press the start button several times, cold and warm. Bad result: a reluctant start or a button that needs several presses.
- Test the screen, Bluetooth and phone pairing on a full drive. Bad result: a freeze, a restart or a phone that will not pair.
- Drive over bumps and listen to the doors and trim. Bad result: creaks or rattles, or door handles that squeak.
- Check the door edge protectors on the sills. Bad result: a protector knocked off or not deployed.
- Ask the seller for the service book with DSG and Haldex oil records. Bad result: no records.

In detail
DSG jerky shifts and clutch wear
Both the 6-speed DSG (1.4 TSI) and the 7-speed DSG report jerky shifts. The jerks come mostly in town traffic, after cold starts and when towing. CarWiki says the fault is a stutter when shifting. The fix is a workshop job, replacing clutch pads. Za Rulem says DSG problems usually appear before half of the 250,000-300,000 km life, so before about 125,000-150,000 km. It names stop-and-go driving, hard acceleration and driving before warm-up as causes. The 7-speed clutch detail is in the DQ381 guide.

Haldex 4x4 front wheels spin
On 4x4 cars the front wheels can spin more easily. CarWiki and Gebrauchtwagenberater both tie this to a missed or overdue Haldex oil change. The fix is to change the clutch oil on schedule. Za Rulem calls the Haldex 5th generation very reliable with proper maintenance. It gives the coupling oil interval as every 30,000-40,000 km and says to check for a leak at the angle gearbox.

Brake discs and pads wear fast
CarWiki says the car weighs about 1,600 to 2,000 kg and the brake system is somewhat under-dimensioned. It says TÜV inspections flag worn brakes more often than average. Gebrauchtwagenberater says the discs fail far too often because of the weight. Firmenauto says the discs are prone to wear. RAC Drive priced parts in the UK in June 2022, excluding VAT, for a 2018 2.0 TDI vRS: front pads about GBP 46 and front discs from about GBP 186.

Electric tailgate opens by itself or does not close
PistonHeads says the tailgate can open on its own or not close fully. It names a possibly faulty microswitch and says the fault seems to be a Skoda thing. Some owners report a failed control unit for the window and the auto-close tailgate. RAC Drive reports that the tailgate cover sometimes stops rolling back.

Start button reluctant start
The engine of an AUTO BILD test car started only reluctantly. The cause was a loose contact at the start button, found at about 96,800 km. Za Rulem reports start button failures on Czech-built cars. Kolesa.ru mentions start-stop button failures.

Infotainment freezes and phone pairing
Kolesa.ru says the head unit freezes and shuts down while driving, and the reverse camera display fails. RAC Drive reports Mirrorlink pairing faults. Auto Express long-term test: the radio presets were lost, the Skoda Connect app would not link to the phone, and the dealer could not fix it. A CarWiki reader reports freezes and a slow boot.

Interior creaks and rattles
RAC Drive reports door handles that creak, rattling sounds, and upholstery parts coming apart on some cars. Za Rulem reports squeaking internal door handles. CarWiki says early builds have rattles from panels not fitted precisely. The fix is extra sound insulation and rework of the plastic parts.

Door edge protectors
RAC Drive reports door guards that jam out and get knocked off. PistonHeads says the door edge protectors did not always deploy correctly.
