At a glance
- What it is: VW's 7-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, code 0GC, for transverse engines up to 420 Nm. It replaced the 6-speed DQ250. Not the dry DQ200 (own guide).
- Main faults: the mechatronic pressure sensors and the electric auxiliary pump. Clutch judder comes later.
- Reliability: 3/5, because the mechatronic and the auxiliary pump fail, although well-serviced cars reach 250,000 to 300,000 km.
- DIY: 1/5, because the mechatronic needs a scanner and coding, and the oil level is set by temperature.
- Buy: a car with the 34K1 or 34L4 campaign done, oil service records, and pressure sensors that read 0.00 bar at rest.
- Avoid: fault codes P1735, P1736 or P0C2900, a car that only uses odd or even gears, or judder when hot.
Known issues
| Issue | Affects | Typical km | Repair cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechatronic failure | All DQ381 cars | 60,000 to 150,000 km | 449 to 1,300 EUR (Germany, year not stated); 2,400 to 3,800 USD reman (US, year not stated) |
| Auxiliary pump | Cars built before October 2017 | Not stated | No confirmed price |
| Clutch wear and judder | All DQ381 cars | 100,000 to 180,000 km | 490 EUR for the set (Germany, year not stated); 2,600 to 4,200 USD fitted (US, year not stated) |
| Oil leaks | All DQ381 cars | Not stated | 950 to 1,050 EUR plus 230 EUR fitting (Germany, year not stated) |
| Gear selector | All DQ381 cars | Not stated | No confirmed price |
Before you buy
- Clutch test drive. From about 1,200 rpm, accelerate uphill and in traffic. Judder, slip or a rise in engine speed without acceleration means a clutch pack, the largest bill.
- Mechatronic scan (needs a scanner). Read P1735, P1736, P0805 and P0607. With the engine off and P selected, both pressures should be 0.00 bar; a drift of 0.20 bar means a failing sensor.
- Auxiliary pump campaign. Give the VIN to a dealer and ask if 34K1 or 34L4 is open or done. A car with code P0C2900 and no campaign record is a risk.
- Oil service records. Old oil wears the mechatronic. Look for changes at 60,000 to 120,000 km and fluid G 055 529 A2. No record is a reason to walk.
- Gear selector (needs a scanner). A "selector lever. You can drive on." message or codes P176A to P176D point to the selector. Check that the repair was done.
- Oil leaks. Look at the mechatronic cover, vent and gearbox joints. Fresh oil means a reseal or a mechatronic job.

In detail
Mechatronic failure
Symptoms. The car drops into emergency mode, the gear indicator flashes and "Gearbox Malfunction" appears. It may use only 1-3-5-7 or 2-4-6-R. A restart sometimes restores it. Codes P1735, P1736, P0805 and P0607 point here.
Cause. There is no separate clutch position sensor. The control unit works out clutch position from two pressure sensors on its board. Sensor drift makes it compensate, so the clutches wear faster.
Which cars. All DQ381 cars. Most fail between 60,000 and 150,000 km.
Fix. Replace both pressure sensors with the newer generation, repair the board, or fit a reconditioned or new mechatronic. The revised marking is SMP132-532. Part numbers are 0GC927711G and 0GC927711H. No recoding is needed after reconditioning.
Cost. Germany: 449 EUR for a board repair or 1,300 EUR fitted including VAT (year not stated). US: 2,400 to 3,800 USD for a remanufactured unit (year not stated). Russia: 130,000 to 140,000 RUB (2021).

Auxiliary pump
Symptoms. Emergency mode, only one gear row, slow shifts and sometimes oil loss. Code P0C2900 means the auxiliary pump is misbehaving.
Cause. The electric auxiliary pump V475 fails. The campaign updates software to monitor it and replaces the pump only if P0C2900 sets.
Which cars. Cars built before 1 October 2017. Later cars have an improved pump.
Fix. The dealer runs the 34K1 or 34L4 update and road-tests the car. If P0C2900 sets, the pump is replaced. The VAICO repair kit is V10-6991-XXL.
Cost. No confirmed price.
Recalls. Audi 34L4 and VW 34K1, see the recalls table.

Clutch wear and judder
Symptoms. Judder when pulling away, worst when cold, on inclines and in stop-go traffic. A shudder between about 1,200 and 1,500 rpm. Slip under hard acceleration, rising engine speed without acceleration, and clutch temperature warnings. Code P2789 means the clutch adaptation is at its limit.
Cause. The friction material wears. The control unit hides the wear by moving the engagement point until adaptation runs out. It cannot restore friction material.
Which cars. All DQ381 cars. Most need a clutch pack between 100,000 and 180,000 km. Hard use can need one before 100,000 km; gentle owners reach 200,000 to 300,000 km.
Fix. A complete wet clutch pack with new sealing rings, oil and filter. Check the flywheel while the gearbox is out.
Cost. Germany: 490 EUR for the clutch set (year not stated). US: 2,600 to 4,200 USD fitted (year not stated). Russia: 30,000 to 60,000 RUB for the kit (2021).

Oil leaks
Symptoms. Oil at the mechatronic vent or cover, at the housing seal, or from the valve body.
Cause. A seal or cover leaks.
Which cars. All DQ381 cars. No mileage is stated.
Fix. Reseal the mechatronic or replace it. An exchange unit is the usual dealer fix.
Cost. Germany: 950 to 1,050 EUR for an exchange mechatronic plus 230 EUR fitting including oil (year not stated).

Gear selector
Symptoms. The message "selector lever. You can drive on." appears, or the car will not select a gear. Codes P176A to P176D mean the gear selector cannot be regulated.
Cause. A solenoid in the gear selector fails.
Which cars. All DQ381 cars; exact years not stated.
Fix. Replace the faulty selector solenoid or the selector unit.
Cost. No confirmed price.

| Country | Code | Years or build range | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | 34K1 | Built before 1 October 2017 | Software update to monitor the auxiliary pump; pump replaced if P0C2900 sets |
| Europe | 34L4 | Built before 1 October 2017 | The same campaign for Audi models |

Maintenance
- Oil. Change it every 60,000 to 120,000 km. VW gives 120,000 km or 5 years; the UK table gives 80,000 miles (about 129,000 km). The fluid is G 055 529 A2.
- Filter. The official schedule is fluid only; many garages also change the filter.
- Level. About 6 litres. Check at 35 to 45 C; oil should just overflow the level pipe.
- Scan. At each service, read both pressure sensors at rest (0.00 bar) and the clutch adaptation. A drift of 0.20 bar means a sensor is going.
