Check the DSG and coupling oil records first, then coolant leaks and cold judder on petrols. Avoid a diesel that only does short trips.

At a glance

  • Years: 2016 to 2024. Facelift from 2020.
  • Reliability: 3/5. Faults in the wet DSG gearbox control unit and clogged diesel exhaust parts are the main known problems.
  • DIY: 2/5. Gearbox, cooling and four-wheel-drive faults need a workshop with a scanner.
  • Biggest risk: the gearbox control unit of the wet DSG (a dual-clutch automatic whose clutches run in oil). It can shut the gearbox into emergency mode.
  • Prefer: a car with DSG and coupling oil records. Avoid: a diesel driven mostly on short trips, and a car with damp carpets or headlining.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.4 TSI, EA211: 125 and 150 PS, 2016 to 2018. See the EA211 engine guide. Coolant pump leaks are a known fault.
  • 1.5 TSI, EA211 evo: 150 PS from 2018 and 130 PS from 2019. See the EA211 engine guide. Cold judder is a known fault.
  • 2.0 TSI, EA888: 180 to 230 PS, with 4MOTION. It has a timing chain, not a belt. Coolant pump leaks are a known fault.
  • 2.0 TDI, EA288: 115 PS (2016 to 2020), 150 and 190 PS, and the 240 PS twin-turbo BiTDI. The EGR valve and particulate filter (DPF) are known faults.
  • Plug-in hybrid (eHybrid), facelift: no common fault confirmed.
  • 6-speed manual: no common fault confirmed.
  • 6-speed wet DSG (DQ250): early cars, 2016 and 2017.
  • 7-speed wet DSG (DQ381): from about model year 2018. Clutches wear in city traffic and when towing.
  • 7-speed wet DSG (DQ500): on the strongest diesel, the 240 PS twin-turbo.
  • 4MOTION all-wheel drive: a Haldex coupling sends drive to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip. Fitted to many cars.

Before you buy

  1. Test drive the car on the wet DSG. Bad result: a gearbox warning, or the gearbox goes into emergency mode. A scanner can read the gearbox fault memory.
  2. Ask for the DSG oil change invoices. Bad result: none. Intervals depend on the gearbox, see Maintenance.
  3. Start from cold and pull away in traffic. Bad result: jerks or shudder at low speed, or harsh changes from first to second.
  4. Look at the brake discs and ask for the last inspection (TÜV) report. Bad result: a deep lip on the disc edge, or brakes flagged at inspection.
  5. Pull away gently from cold and watch for judder at very low speed. Ask whether the software update was done. Bad result: judder, or no update record.
  6. Ask how the diesel was driven. Bad result: mostly short trips. Short trips let the particulate filter and the EGR valve clog.
  7. On a 4MOTION car, ask for the coupling oil change record. Bad result: none, or the front wheels spin while the rear wheels do not pull.
  8. With the engine off, check the coolant level and look under the engine for leaks. Bad result: low coolant, or a leak near the pump.
  9. Check the headlining and footwells for damp. Bad result: damp, stains or a musty smell, which points to the panoramic roof drains.

In detail

Wet DSG gearbox control unit

The gearbox control unit (the mechatronic, part electronics and part hydraulics) has pressure sensors and a control board. These can fail. The gearbox then goes into emergency mode to prevent damage: reverse and some gears are lost. Specialists can re-solder the board and replace the sensors, so a full unit is not always needed. A software update may also be needed. No typical mileage or repair price is confirmed.

DSG clutch wear

In the 7-speed wet DSG, the clutches wear early in city traffic and when towing. Worn clutch linings need a mechanical repair. The most common complaint is judder when pulling away and jerky changes from first to second, especially with a cold gearbox. When the clutches are not yet worn, a software update and a reset of the clutch adaptation (the point where the clutch first bites) can fix it. No typical mileage or repair price is confirmed.

Cold-start judder on 1.5 TSI

The 1.5 TSI (EA211 evo) judders when pulling away from rest or at very low speed in first gear. It is worst with a cold engine, at about 1,800 to 2,800 rpm, and mostly on older cars with a manual gearbox. A software update fixes it. No typical mileage or repair price is confirmed. See the EA211 engine guide.

EGR valve and DPF on 2.0 TDI

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve feeds exhaust back into the engine to cut emissions. The DPF (diesel particulate filter) traps soot. On the 2.0 TDI (EA288) both clog when the car does mostly short or city trips. A faulty EGR valve can cause rough idle or misfires. Regular longer runs at higher revs help the filter clean itself. No typical mileage or repair price is confirmed.

Haldex pump on 4MOTION

The Haldex coupling sends drive to the rear wheels. Its pre-charge pump keeps the coupling under pressure. Oil sludge can make the pump fail. Then the rear wheels stop being driven, and the front wheels spin. Change the coupling oil soon after you buy the car. No typical mileage or repair price is confirmed.

Coolant pump leaks on TSI petrols

On the 1.4 TSI (EA211) and the third-generation 2.0 TSI (EA888), the coolant pump and the two thermostats sit in one plastic housing. The housing can deform and leak through its seals. Check the coolant level and look for crust or a sweet smell near the pump. No typical mileage or repair price is confirmed.

Water leaks from the panoramic roof

The drains of the panoramic sunroof can clog, and the roof then leaks. Water reaches the headlining and the footwells. No typical mileage or repair price is confirmed.

Brake discs wear fast

The brake discs wear quickly and are often flagged at the German inspection (TÜV). Front discs and pads can be due at about every 50,000 km on a heavily used car. No repair price is confirmed.

Recalls

No recall with a confirmed code is listed here. Check open campaigns for the car's VIN (vehicle identification number) with a VW dealer or the KBA, the German motor authority.

Maintenance

  • Wet DSG oil and filter: every 40,000 to 60,000 km on the 6-speed and the strongest 7-speed. Every 60,000 to 120,000 km on the 7-speed from 2018. Follow the service book and keep the invoices.
  • 4MOTION coupling oil: change it soon after you buy the car, then follow the service book.
  • Timing belt (1.5 TSI and 2.0 TDI): 210,000 km on the 1.5 TSI and the 115, 150 and 190 PS diesels. 120,000 km on the 240 PS engine. Ask for the belt invoice.
