At a glance
- Years: 2015 to today. Production ended in 2026. The 2023 update added a digital cockpit.
- Reliability: 3/5. German inspection (TÜV) defect rates are close to average when young and better after five years.
- DIY: 2/5. The parking brake needs a scanner; climate and gearbox faults need diagnosis.
- Biggest risk: water in the panoramic roof. Blocked drains soak the footwells and damage A-pillar wiring. The roof also had a fire-risk recall.
- Prefer: a car with proof of the roof LED recall and dry footwells. Avoid: a damp roof lining or no recall history.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.4 TSI (CZD): 150 PS, manual or 7-speed DSG. Water pump is a known weak point. See the EA211 1.2-1.4 TSI guide.
- 1.5 TSI (DPC, DXD): 150 PS, manual or 7-speed DSG. Cold-start judder; a software update is the usual fix. See the 1.5 TSI evo guide.
- 1.6 TDI (CRK, DGD): 110 or 115 PS, manual or 7-speed DSG, 2015-2019.
- 2.0 TDI (DFG, DXR, DTS, DXP, DFH): 115-190 PS, manual or DSG. Intake and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve can clog on short trips. See the 2.0 TDI EA288 guide.
- 7-speed dry DSG (DQ200): petrol cars and the 1.6 TDI. Clutch wear and mechatronic faults. See the DQ200 guide.
- 7-speed wet DSG (DQ381): 2.0 TDI from 2018. See the DQ381 guide.
- 6-speed wet DSG: 2.0 TDI 150 and 190 PS, 2015-2019. No guide yet.

Before you buy
- Test the dual-clutch automatic (DSG) from cold. Bad result: judder or a warning. A scanner can read the fault memory. See the gearbox guide.
- Start the car and use the infotainment. Bad result: black screen, freeze, or slow Android Auto. A head unit costs 400-800 EUR (country not stated, 2026).
- Pour water into the roof drains. Bad result: water builds up, does not drain, or footwells are damp.
- Check the VIN (vehicle identification number) for open recalls: roof LED, steering 17016R, head restraint, engine software, brake pedal 46I6. Bad result: an open campaign.
- Check rear brakes and drive over bumps. Bad result: a lip, pads near the limit, knocks, or a broken spring.
- Look under the engine and gearbox for oil. Bad result: drips or a wet undertray.
- Run the air conditioning and listen in the footwell. Bad result: knocking when cold. A scanner can read B108D71.

In detail
Panoramic roof LED module fire risk
Moisture in the roof LED module can cause a short circuit, heat, and fire. The recall covers cars built April 2015 to July 2018. Codes are 60C9 and R/2018/331. The fix adds fused adapter cables to the wiring. No repair price is given.

Water leaks from the panoramic roof
Blocked roof drains send water over the cassette into the footwells and A-pillar plugs. Signs are damp carpets, a wet headlining, a musty smell, or codes 148C and 148B. Clean the drains and repair damaged pins. 200-400 EUR independent for all four drains, up to 600 EUR at a dealer (country not stated, 2026).

Rear brake wear
Rear discs and pads wear fast. TÜV flags discs as the weakest area at four to five years: 2.0% against 1.9% average. UK MOT data also show brake faults above average. No confirmed repair price is available.

Front suspension wear
Ball joints and drop links wear, so the car knocks over bumps. Check axle mounts and springs on older cars. TÜV sees 0.5% axle faults at four to five years against 0.4%. Hubs last 60,000-80,000 km, top mounts about 100,000 km, links 100,000-120,000 km.

Oil leaks from the engine and gearbox
Oil loss appears even on young cars. TÜV criticises leaks, especially on the youngest, and AUTO BILD reports oil from engine and gearbox above average. Check under the car and the undertray. No confirmed repair price.

Infotainment screen freezes
The MIB2 unit, sold as Discover Media, can stay black or freeze. Hold the power and volume knob for 10-15 seconds to restart. A replacement head unit costs 400-800 EUR for parts and programming (country not stated, 2026).

Air conditioning flap motor knock
A rhythmic knock from the passenger footwell can come from the flap motor. It is worst when cold and stops after the air conditioning is switched off and on. Code B108D71 points to the V159 motor. A new motor needs teaching in with a scanner. No confirmed price.

- DSG oil: the wet DSG needs oil changes; the dry DQ200 has no fixed interval. See the gearbox guides.
- Engine oil and service: every 15,000 km, or follow the service book.
- Panoramic roof drains: pour water into the drains at every service. If water builds up, clean them with a dedicated brush.
