In detail
Water leaks into the cabin and boot
Water enters through worn tailgate rubbers or blocked drains and collects in the boot and spare-wheel well. Door seals can let water into the footwells, and rain can drip from the headlining near the mirror. Look for damp carpets, water stains and a musty smell. Seal replacement costs 100-300 GBP (UK, 2026). Find the leak before it reaches the wiring.

Engine cover fire risk
On 2.0 TSI cars built from 28 February 2020 to 3 February 2022 the plastic engine cover can come loose. It can touch the hot turbocharger and start a fire. VW recall 10H5 covers about 58,100 cars worldwide. The fix is free at a dealer. Check the VIN with VW or the KBA, the German motor authority.
