At a glance

  • Years: built from 2017, facelift from 2021. The 2018 and 2019 model years are covered by the rear seat belt recall.
  • Main risk: the DQ200 gearbox judders or jerks when pulling away. A mechatronic repair can cost up to 2,800 EUR.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because the gearbox is the costly weak point.
  • DIY: 1/5, because the gearbox repairs go to a specialist workshop.
  • Prefer: a car with proof of the free seat belt fix and a gearbox that pulls away smoothly. Avoid: a car that judders or jerks when pulling away, and a 2018 or 2019 car with no record of the seat belt fix.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 2.0 TSI petrol (200 or 207 PS, GTI): EA888 engine. No common fault confirmed.

Before you buy

  1. DQ200 gearbox. On a test drive, pull away from a stop and change gear. Bad result: a judder, jerk or clunk when pulling away, or gears that jump. A new clutch costs 1,400 to 1,800 EUR and a mechatronic repair 1,800 to 2,800 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
  2. EGR valve on the 1.6 TDI. On a high-mileage car, ask for proof that the EGR valve was cleaned or replaced. Bad result: no record of the work. The job costs 380 to 720 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
  3. Rear seat belt recall. Ask a dealer whether the free rear seat belt fix was done. Bad result: no record of it. Until it is done, do not use the rear middle seat.
